Job descriptions & requirements

Company Description SmartVet Africa is an AI-powered veterinary network that connects smallholder poultry farmers with nearby trained veterinarians to prevent bird deaths from common, treatable diseases. Farmers report symptoms through a mobile app or SMS, SmartVet’s system predicts likely diseases, and a vet arrives quickly with appropriate vaccines and treatments. The model has already improved survival rates to about 95% and significantly increased farmers’ income, while providing stable earnings for vets.

SmartVet currently operates across Northern Uganda, including Gulu, with a growing network of vets and farmers and a proven model that pays for itself through reduced losses. The mission is to make veterinary care fast, reliable, and affordable, reducing preventable bird deaths and supporting household livelihoods.

Role Description This is a part-time, on-site Paravets role based in Gulu, working directly with smallholder poultry farmers in the SmartVet network. On a day-to-day basis, the Paravet responds to farmer alerts, travels to farms, assesses bird health, and administers vaccines and treatments in line with SmartVet protocols.

The role includes documenting cases in the SmartVet system or app, communicating clearly with farmers about disease prevention, and following biosecurity measures to minimize disease spread. Paravets collaborate with supervising veterinarians, participate in regular training to stay updated on poultry diseases and treatment practices, and ensure that vaccine stocks and equipment are prepared for rapid deployment. The position requires flexibility to work on call, including evenings or weekends as needed, to meet response-time targets and support emergency farm visits.

Qualifications

  • Formal training in animal health or veterinary sciences (e.g., paraveterinary certificate, diploma in animal production and health, or related field).
  • Practical skills in poultry disease recognition, vaccination, treatment procedures, and flock health management.
  • Ability to use mobile phones or apps for recording data, receiving assignments, and communicating with the SmartVet system.
  • Strong communication and farmer education skills, including explaining prevention practices in clear, simple language.
  • Demonstrated reliability in working on call, managing schedules, and traveling frequently within Gulu and surrounding areas.
  • Commitment to biosecurity, animal welfare, and adherence to clinical and ethical standards.
  • Fluency in English and relevant local languages common in Gulu and Northern Uganda.
  • Previous experience working with rural communities, poultry farms, or livestock projects is an added advantage.
  • Motorbike riding competence and a valid riding license are highly beneficial for reaching farms quickly.
