Job summary
The Field Manager serves as the primary technical and operational lead for all on-site activities within the Uganda Seed Value Chain Capacity Building Project. The central purpose of this position is to bridge the gap between high-level project strategy and ground-level execution.
Job descriptions & requirements
- Responsible for tasks related to vegeseed breeding in four project sites. Especially centered around NaCRRI, MuZARDI, and NSCS, it covers the Mukono and Luwero regions.
- Liaise with project beneficiaries to view project outputs and beneficiaries, to ensure that progress is made in the achievement of project objectives.
- Develop a new vegetable variety targeting 5 crops like Nakati, Tomato, Onion, Pumpkin, and Chili pepper.
- Coordinate and communicate the tasks regarding new variety development among the breeders who belong to NARO, NaCRRI, MuZARDI, and NSCS.
- Monitor the progress in all the breeding work under the Project.
- Provide training on seed Multiplication, distribution of certified seeds to farmers, and crop production increase, focusing on the five vegetable crops that have been bred.
- Crop Monitoring: Regularly inspect crops for signs of pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and other issues that could affect plant health and yield.
- Planting and Harvesting: Assist in planting and harvesting operations, ensuring proper spacing, depth, and timing for optimal crop growth and yield.
- Irrigation Management: Monitor and manage irrigation systems to ensure crops receive the appropriate amount of water. Adjust irrigation schedules and methods based on weather conditions and crop needs.
- Pest and Disease Control: Implement pest and disease control measures, which may include applying pesticides, setting traps, or implementing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
- Weed Control: Carry out weed management activities, including manual weeding, the use of herbicides, or the implementation of weed control practices such as mulching.
- Fertilization: Apply fertilizers and soil amendments according to recommended rates and timing, as determined by soil tests and crop requirements.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of field activities, including planting dates, crop treatments, and yields, to track the progress and success of the farming operation.
- Harvest Handling: Properly handle and store seeds, ensuring they are cleaned, sorted, and stored under appropriate conditions to maintain quality and prevent spoilage.
- Data Collection: Collect data related to crop yields, pest and disease incidence, weather conditions, and other relevant factors for analysis and decision-making
- Ensure proper maintenance of the project facilities for effective and efficient performance.
- Collect all the necessary data or information and make the necessary reports.
- Ensure that all project activities are done efficiently and effectively.
- Document and submit quality weekly, monthly, Semi-annual, and annual reports to line managers.
- Any other duty as may be assigned by the supervisors.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Horticulture, or a related Agricultural Engineering field., or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in agricultural field operations or farm management.
- Proven experience in agricultural development projects, specifically within seed systems or value chain enhancement.
- Technical Skills:
- Crop Management: Deep technical knowledge of the growth cycles, pest/disease management, and irrigation needs of the 5 target crops.
- Infrastructure Oversight: Ability to supervise the construction and maintenance of Greenhouses, Irrigation Systems, and Seed Processing Facilities.
- Extension & Training: Skilled in the Farmer Field School (FFS) methodology and the ability to translate technical breeding data into practical farming instructions.
- Operational Logistics: Proficiency in managing field budgets, local labor contracts, and the supply chain of agricultural inputs (fertilizers, tools, etc.).
- Leadership: Strong capability to lead and motivate a diverse team of local field officers and laborers in remote or rural settings.
- Language: Fluency in English (written and spoken). Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
