Organization description
Eastern Private Sector Development Centre and CARD Uganda Agribusiness Centre, in a Joint Venture, are providing agricultural extension services and business development services under the National Oilseed Project assignment for the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. The districts of operation are Budaka, Busia, Butaleja, Butebo, Kibuku, Pallisa and Tororo.
The goal of the programme is to increase household incomes from agro-industry, mainly through increasing commercialization and competitiveness of agricultural production and agro-processing. The NOSP development Objective is to “accelerate commercialization in key oilseeds value chains and thereby improve the livelihoods and resilience of the smallholders engaged in oilseed production and marketing.”
Job purpose
Coordinate and lead the design, implementation and evaluation of strategies, policies and agricultural investment operations with a focus on agribusiness development and the creation of an enabling environment for efficient and inclusive agriculture and food systems, including functioning agricultural support services to rural markets and finance institutions.
Specific responsibilities:
1. Conduct needs assessments for the SMEs and develop capacity-building strategies for the SMEs
2. Strengthen farmers skills in farming as a business through training for the SMEs
3. Create market linkages for the SMEs
4. Support groups to develop bankable business plans translated into operational plans.
5. Support farmer groups in record-keeping and management-develop templates such as business diaries, LSB log book, etc and guide the farmers on how to use them in making informed business decisions.
6. Support farmer groups to build strong internal and external resource mobilisation and management strategies
7. Support farmer groups on farm labour and mechanisation management
8. Support groups to develop marketing plans and strategies following the 4Ps: product, price, place, and promotion
9. Support Contract farming modalities and operationalization between farmer organizations and business firms (off-takers, processors) in the oilseed VCs
10. Support groups to formalize their businesses with the relevant authorities/agencies
11. Link the farmer organizations to BDS such as mechanization, packaging, inputs, etc
12. The Agribusiness Development Officer will also be in charge of Market information gathering and improving access to markets/ off takers.
Minimum requirements
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, or Agriculture in Community Development. Any other related post-graduate qualifications will be an added advantage.
- Should demonstrate at least 3 years of relevant experience in rural development activities such as agribusiness development, market research, capacity building, organizational development, and development economics
- Must have a proven record in conducting training needs assessments and developing capacity-building development strategies
- Experience working with farmer groups in aspects of farming as a business
- Experience working with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), investment proposals/plan development, appraisal, monitoring and evaluation, and feasibility analysis
- Recommendation letter from 3 referees including the most recent or previous employer
