We are seeking a highly competent, results-oriented, and experienced Credit Manager to lead and strengthen the institution’s credit function. The Credit Manager will be responsible for managing the full credit cycle—from credit appraisal and approval processes to loan monitoring, portfolio quality management, delinquency control, recovery and reporting. The successful candidate will provide strong leadership to the credit team and ensure that lending decisions support sustainable growth while maintaining prudent credit-risk standards. This is a hands-on management role requiring a strong understanding of SACCO lending, credit risk, loan portfolio management, delinquency management and recovery practices in Uganda.

About the Role
We are seeking a highly competent, results-oriented, and experienced Credit Manager to lead and strengthen the institution’s credit function. The Credit Manager will be responsible for managing the full credit cycle—from credit appraisal and approval processes to loan monitoring, portfolio quality management, delinquency control, recovery and reporting. The successful candidate will provide strong leadership to the credit team and ensure that lending decisions support sustainable growth while maintaining prudent credit-risk standards. This is a hands-on management role requiring a strong understanding of SACCO lending, credit risk, loan portfolio management, delinquency management and recovery practices in Uganda.

Key Responsibilities
1. Credit & Loan Portfolio Management
  • Lead the day-to-day management of the SACCO's credit function and loan portfolio.
  • Develop and implement effective credit management strategies aligned with institutional objectives.
  • Ensure loans are appraised, approved, disbursed, monitored and recovered in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, portfolio-at-risk, delinquency, arrears, provisioning and loan recovery trends.
  • Identify emerging credit risks and recommend appropriate corrective measures.
  • Maintain a healthy balance between portfolio growth, member service and credit quality.

2. Credit Appraisal & Risk Management
  • Review and strengthen credit appraisal processes and ensure sound lending decisions.
  • Ensure proper assessment of borrowers' repayment capacity, cash flows, character, collateral/security, and overall creditworthiness.
  • Review credit applications and recommendations within delegated authority.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, security perfection and compliance with lending requirements.
  • Identify high-risk exposures and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Regularly review the effectiveness of credit policies, procedures, lending products and approval limits.

3. Delinquency & Loan Recovery
  • Take overall responsibility for reducing loan delinquency and maintaining a high-quality loan portfolio.
  • Establish effective early-warning and arrears-management systems.
  • Supervise and coordinate collection and recovery activities.
  • Ensure timely follow-up of overdue accounts and escalation of problematic loans.
  • Develop recovery strategies for non-performing and difficult loans.
  • Work with credit officers and relevant management teams to negotiate appropriate repayment arrangements where necessary.
  • Ensure recovery actions are properly documented and undertaken within applicable policies and legal requirements.
  • Monitor the performance of recovery efforts and report on recovery outcomes.

Qualifications & Experience
Minimum Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Commerce, Business Administration, Banking, Microfinance or a related field.
  • Professional qualifications in Credit Management, Banking, Finance, Risk Management, Accounting or related disciplines will be an added advantage.
  • At least 5 years relevant experience in credit management, preferably within a SACCO, microfinance institution, bank or other regulated financial institution.
  • At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or management position within a credit function.
  • Demonstrable experience managing loan delinquency, arrears and recoveries.
  • Strong knowledge of credit appraisal, loan portfolio management and credit-risk assessment.
  • Practical understanding of SACCO lending operations and the Ugandan financial-services environment.
  • Strong analytical, leadership, negotiation and communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and familiarity with computerized credit/SACCO management systems.

Important Eligibility Requirement
This position is strictly open to Ugandan citizens currently eligible to work in Uganda.
The position is Kampala-based, and applicants must be available to work from Kampala.
