Job Summary:
Our Client, one of the fastest growing Ugandan agribusiness and processing companies is looking for a self-driven and passionate individual to join the team as a Barley Field Quality Controller. The Barley Quality Controller reporting to the Agronomist based at the Company’s Barley Centers will be responsible for Inspecting incoming barley, conducting lab tests, authorizing grades/prices while ensuring compliance with safety standards, and maintaining transparent farmer relationships.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Operate and maintain all laboratory equipment (moisture meters, scales, sieves) at the buying centre, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
- Perform definitive quality tests on all incoming barley lots to determine moisture content, test weight, foreign matter percentage, varietal purity, and visual defects.
- Make the final, binding decision to accept, reject, or downgrade each lot based on lab results, and authorize the official purchase price in accordance with company SOPs.
- Generate and issue accurate Weight and Quality Tickets that form the legal and financial basis for farmer payment.
- Professionally manage and explain grading decisions directly to farmers, resolving quality-related disputes at the buying centre level.
- Maintain impeccable, tamper-proof records and a sample archive for 100% lot traceability from farmer to intake.
- Train and oversee buying centre agents on proper sampling techniques, fair conduct, and quality protocols.
- Enforce strict compliance with UNBS, food safety (GSP), and buyer-specific standards while maintaining unwavering personal and procedural integrity.
- Liaise with the warehouse team to ensure accepted barley is correctly segregated, labeled, and stored by grade for onward logistics.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Diploma in Agriculture, Food Science & Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in grain quality control, laboratory analysis, or procurement within a formal grain buying centre, warehouse, or processing plant. Experience with barley or malt is a significant advantage.
- Certified proficiency in official grain grading standards and use of laboratory equipment.
- Unquestionable integrity, fairness, and the ability to remain firm and consistent under pressure.
- Excellent analytical, record-keeping, and reporting skills.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel) and data entry systems.
