About Terya
Terya Building and Construction Limited is a multidisciplinary engineering and infrastructure company delivering high-performance engineering solutions across Uganda. Our disciplines include building construction and civil engineering, electrical and industrial engineering, renewable energy and energy storage systems, generator installation and maintenance, smart infrastructure, industrial automation, telecommunications infrastructure, and certified testing and calibration services.

As the official distributor of AKSA Power Generation products in Uganda, we deliver integrated power and control solutions to industrial, commercial, institutional and residential clients.

Automation is where our electrical, mechanical and software capabilities converge. Terya applies control engineering to make client systems measurable, remotely visible, safer and more efficient - from generator and energy system controls to industrial process automation and smart building infrastructure.

Position Summary
The Mechatronics Engineer designs, programs, integrates and maintains the automated and instrumented systems within Terya's projects. The work sits deliberately across boundaries: PLC and SCADA programming, control panel design, instrumentation, drives and motion control, pneumatics and hydraulics, industrial networking, and embedded monitoring for smart infrastructure.

This role exists because modern infrastructure is expected to control itself, report on itself and fail safely. Manual operation and blind assets are no longer acceptable to clients running critical facilities. Your control narratives, programme logic and commissioning discipline determine whether a system runs reliably for years or generates call-outs every month.

You will translate client requirements into control philosophies, build and test the logic, commission on site, and train the people who will operate the system afterwards. Because Terya is multidisciplinary, your work connects directly to electrical, energy and civil delivery teams rather than sitting in isolation.

For an engineer building a career in automation in Uganda, the breadth here is unusual. You will accumulate experience across sectors and technologies, receive mentorship from senior engineers, and progress towards
senior automation engineer, systems integration lead or technical management roles as your record allows.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Automation Design and Programming
• Design, develop and configure PLC control systems using ladder logic, function block and structured text.
• Develop SCADA and HMI applications including screens, alarms, trends, security and reporting.
• Design control panels, input/output schedules, wiring diagrams and control philosophies.
• Integrate variable frequency drives, servo drives, motors and motion control systems.
• Configure industrial communication networks such as Modbus RTU/TCP, Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP and CAN.
• Develop embedded and microcontroller-based solutions and IoT monitoring for smart infrastructure applications.

Instrumentation and System Integration
• Select, install and configure sensors, transmitters, actuators and final control elements.
• Integrate pneumatic and hydraulic actuation systems with electrical control circuits.
• Interface automation platforms with generator controls, solar PV, energy storage and building management systems.
• Implement remote monitoring and telemetry for geographically distributed client assets.

Testing, Commissioning and Handover
• Develop and execute factory acceptance test (FAT) and site acceptance test (SAT) protocols.
• Perform loop checks, tune control loops and validate interlocks and safety functions before energisation.
• Commission automated systems and deliver structured operator and maintenance training to clients.

Maintenance and Reliability
• Troubleshoot mechatronic faults spanning mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and software domains.
• Maintain secure backups of PLC, HMI and SCADA programmes under disciplined version control.
• Implement predictive maintenance using vibration, thermal imaging and current signature data.
• Service and maintain robotic and automated production equipment.

Safety, Documentation and Improvement
• Apply functional safety principles, machine guarding and emergency stop circuit design.
• Produce and maintain as-built documentation, control narratives and operation and maintenance manuals.
• Analyse downtime and performance data, and lead continuous improvement and automation upgrade initiatives.
• Support feasibility studies, technical proposals and cost estimates for automation projects.
• Comply with all quality management, health, safety and environmental procedures.
• Mentor technicians and trainee engineers on automation practice and safe working methods.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Education
• Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control, or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution.
• Diploma holders with demonstrable PLC and automation competence are encouraged to apply and will be given priority consideration.

Preferred Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics, Electromechanical, Control Systems or Industrial Automation Engineering.

Professional Certifications (Advantageous)
• PLC programming certification from a recognised platform vendor (Siemens, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell,Schneider, Mitsubishi, Delta or equivalent).
• SCADA or HMI development certification.
• Industrial instrumentation and process control certification.
• Functional safety, machine safety or robotics training.
• Graduate membership of, or eligibility for registration with, the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE).
• Valid driving permit is an added advantage for field-based assignments.

Technical Competencies
Control and Automation
