About Terya
Terya Building and Construction Limited is a multidisciplinary engineering and infrastructure company delivering high-performance engineering solutions across Uganda. We work across building construction and civil engineering, electrical and industrial engineering, renewable energy, solar PV and energy storage systems, generator installation and maintenance, smart infrastructure, industrial automation, telecommunications infrastructure, and certified testing and calibration services.

As the official distributor of AKSA Power Generation products in Uganda, we design, supply, install and maintain standby and prime power systems for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional clients nationwide.

Electrical engineering sits at the core of that offering. Our engineers take work from load assessment and design through installation supervision, testing, commissioning and long-term maintenance - with quality, safety and technical precision applied consistently at every stage.

Position Summary
The Electrical Engineer takes responsibility for electrical design, installation supervision, testing and commissioning across Terya's building, infrastructure and energy projects. The scope is deliberately broad: power distribution and switchgear, standby generation, solar PV and energy storage, earthing and protection, and the electrical services that support smart and telecommunications infrastructure.

The role exists because clients need power systems that are correctly sized, safely installed, properly tested and dependable for years - not merely energised. Errors in cable sizing, protection coordination or earthing are expensive and dangerous; sound engineering judgement at design stage prevents both. Your calculations, drawings and site decisions determine whether a project performs as promised.

You will coordinate with civil, mechanical, automation and quality teams, supervise technicians and contractors, and interface directly with clients and consultants. That exposure builds well-rounded engineers rather than narrow specialists.

Terya offers a strong development environment for electrical engineering careers in Uganda: varied infrastructure projects, mentorship from senior engineers, support towards professional registration, and progression into senior engineer, project management or specialist renewable energy roles for those who deliver consistently.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Design and Engineering
• Prepare electrical designs, load schedules, single-line diagrams and installation layouts for buildings, industrial facilities and infrastructure projects.
• Perform cable sizing, voltage drop, short-circuit and protection coordination calculations.
• Produce and review electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical and related design software.
• Design earthing, bonding and lightning protection systems in line with applicable standards.
• Size and specify switchgear, distribution boards, transformers, capacitor banks and protective devices.
• Design solar PV and energy storage systems, including array layout, string sizing, inverter selection and battery capacity.
• Specify generator sets, synchronisation panels, automatic transfer switches and associated fuel systems.

Installation and Site Delivery
• Supervise electrical installation works to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications and safety requirements.
• Coordinate with civil, mechanical, automation and telecommunications teams to integrate services cleanly.
• Inspect contractor and subcontractor workmanship and enforce corrective action where standards are not met.
• Manage material take-offs, requisitions and site material control for electrical works.

Testing and Commissioning
• Plan and execute electrical testing including insulation resistance, continuity, earth resistance, polarity and phase rotation.
• Commission low-voltage and medium-voltage distribution systems, solar PV plants, generators and energy storage systems.
• Witness performance tests and prepare complete commissioning and handover documentation.

Operations, Maintenance and Energy Performance
• Develop and oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programmes for electrical assets.
• Diagnose and resolve complex electrical faults, minimising downtime for clients.
• Conduct energy audits and recommend efficiency, power factor and power quality improvements.

Project Delivery, Compliance and Leadership
• Prepare technical submittals, method statements, bills of quantities and progress reports.
• Ensure compliance with national wiring regulations, IEC standards, regulatory requirements and client specifications.
• Support tendering and estimation with technical input, design options and cost data.
• Enforce safe systems of work including permit-to-work, safe isolation and lock-out / tag-out.
• Monitor project programme, resources and budget for the electrical scope, escalating risks early.
• Mentor technicians, graduate engineers and trainees, and contribute to internal technical training.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Education
• Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution.
• Diploma holders with strong practical design and site competence are encouraged to apply and will be given priority consideration.

Preferred Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering or Energy Engineering.

Professional Certifications and Licensing
• Electrical installation permit or licence issued by the relevant national authority, or eligibility to obtain one, is a significant advantage.
• Graduate membership of, or eligibility for registration with, the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) and the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
• Solar PV design and installation certification (T1/T2/T3 or equivalent).
• AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical certification.
• Occupational health and safety certification such as NEBOSH or IOSH.
• A valid driving permit is an added advantage for project-based assignments.

Technical Competencies
Power Systems and Design
• Power distribution design (LV and MV)
• Cable sizing, voltage drop and short-circuit calculations
• Switchgear specification and protection coordination
• Earthing, bonding and lightning protection design
• Load assessment, demand analysis and power factor correction
• Electrical drawings, single-line diagrams and schedules

Energy Systems
• Solar PV system design, string sizing and inverter selection
• Energy storage systems and battery capacity sizing
• Generator systems, synchronisation, ATS and standby power
• Hybrid and off-grid renewable energy configurations
• Energy auditing and efficiency optimisation
• Power quality assessment and harmonics awareness

Software, Testing and Delivery
• AutoCAD Electrical and electrical design software
• PV design tools such as PVsyst or equivalent
• Electrical testing: insulation resistance, earth resistance, continuity, polarity
• Commissioning procedures and handover documentation
• IEC standards and national wiring regulations
• Bills of quantities, estimation and technical submittals
• Project scheduling and MS Office proficiency

Soft Skills and Professional Competencies
• Sound engineering judgement
• Analytical and quantitative reasoning
• Leadership and site presence
• Clear technical communication with clients and consultants
• Attention to detail in calculation and drawing
• Planning, organisation and time management
• Safety leadership and risk awareness
• Collaboration across engineering disciplines
• Integrity and professional ethics
• Problem solving under site pressure
• Adaptability across project types
• Mentoring and knowledge sharing
• Commercial awareness and cost consciousness

Experience
• Two to five (2–5) years of experience in electrical design, installation, testing or commissioning within construction, energy or industrial environments is preferred.
• Practical exposure to solar PV, generator systems or energy storage installations is a strong advantage.
• Industrial training and supervised site attachment experience will be taken into account.
• Fresh graduates with exceptional technical competence are encouraged to apply and will be considered for a structured graduate engineer track.
