Job summary

The School Nurse is responsible for safeguarding the health and wellbeing of students and staff at the school by providing basic clinical care, health education, disease prevention, and emergency first aid, in line with Uganda Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and Sports school health guidelines. The role combines clinical competence with compassionate, learner-centered care, ensuring a safe, healthy learning environment that supports students’ physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. The School Nurse works closely with the Director of Studies, school administration, teaching staff, parents, and local health authorities to promote student health, hygiene, and safety within a Christ-centered school community

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & First Aid
• Provide first aid and emergency treatment to students and staff in cases of injury, illness, or accidents occurring on school premises.
• Assess, triage, and manage common childhood and adolescent illnesses, referring serious or complicated cases promptly to the nearest health facility.
• Administer prescribed medication to students in line with parental consent, medical prescriptions, and school medication policy.
• Maintain and stock a well-organized school sick bay/clinic with essential first aid supplies, basic medicines, and emergency equipment.
• Coordinate referrals, ambulance transport, and communication with parents/guardians and nearby health centers or hospitals in emergency situations.
• Conduct routine health checks, including screening for common conditions (vision, hearing, dental, skin, and nutritional status) as guided by MoH/MoES school health guidelines.

Health Promotion & Disease Prevention
• Plan and deliver health education sessions on hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention, and substance abuse, in line with the national school health curriculum.
• Promote and monitor personal hygiene practices among students, including handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and general sanitation.
• Support immunization campaigns, deworming programs, and other public health initiatives conducted by the Ministry of Health in schools.
• Monitor and help prevent the spread of communicable diseases within the school, including timely identification, isolation, and reporting of outbreaks.
• Educate students, staff, and kitchen/catering personnel on food safety and hygiene standards.
• Participate in malaria prevention initiatives, including promotion of mosquito net use and environmental sanitation around the school.

Health Records & Reporting
• Maintain accurate, confidential health records for all students, including medical history, allergies, chronic conditions, and treatment given.
• Track and document all clinic visits, referrals, and outcomes, ensuring proper record-keeping in line with school and Ministry of Health requirements.
• Prepare and submit regular health reports to school administration and relevant health authorities, including notifiable disease reporting where required.
• Monitor and report on school-wide health trends (e.g., recurring illnesses, nutrition concerns) to inform school health policy and planning.

Student Wellbeing & Psychosocial Support
• Identify students with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or special health needs, and coordinate appropriate support and accommodations with teachers and school leadership.
• Provide basic psychosocial support and referral for students facing emotional distress, trauma, abuse, or mental health concerns, working with the guidance and counseling department where available.
• Support students with reproductive health concerns and adolescent health issues with sensitivity, confidentiality, and age-appropriate guidance.
• Mentor and counsel students on healthy lifestyle choices, self-care, and responsible decision-making, reflecting Christian values of dignity and compassion.

Environmental Health & Safety
• Conduct or support routine inspections of school sanitation facilities, water sources, kitchen/dining areas, and dormitories (where applicable) to ensure compliance with public health standards.
• Advise school administration on improvements needed in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities and practices.
• Support the school in maintaining a safe environment, including safe storage of chemicals/cleaning agents and management of medical/clinical waste.
• Participate in school emergency preparedness planning, including health-related components of disaster response and safety drills.

Resource & Records Management
• Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for medical supplies, first aid materials, and health education resources.
• Ensure proper storage, stock control, and expiry monitoring of medicines and clinical supplies in line with Ministry of Health guidelines.
• Maintain an inventory of clinic equipment and coordinate maintenance or replacement as needed.

Teamwork & Collaboration
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies, teaching staff, and school administration to promote a healthy school environment.
• Participate in staff meetings, briefings, and school-wide events, providing health input where relevant.
• Liaise with local health centers, district health officers, and Ministry of Health programs on school health initiatives and outreach services.
• Engage parents and the local community on student health matters, including home-based follow-up for chronic or ongoing health concerns where appropriate.

Other Duties
• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications & Experience
• Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Nursing Sciences, Clinical Medicine, or a related health field from a recognized institution.
• Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC), in good standing.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ clinical nursing experience, preferably including exposure to pediatric, adolescent, or school health services.
• Sound knowledge of Uganda Ministry of Health protocols, school health guidelines, and public health/preventive care practices.
• Valid certification in First Aid and Basic Life Support/CPR.
• A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered service.

• Calm and composed under pressure, especially during medical emergencies.
• High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability in handling sensitive health information.

• Collaborative team player who contributes positively to the wider school community.

Technical Competencies
• Strong clinical skills in first aid, basic diagnosis, and treatment of common illnesses and injuries.
• Competent in health record-keeping, reporting, and documentation in line with Ministry of Health standards.
• Skilled in health education delivery and behavior change communication for adolescents.
• Knowledge of immunization schedules, communicable disease control, and outbreak response procedures.
• Basic proficiency in using technology for health records and reporting.
• Capable of maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized school clinic/sick bay.
