Job summary

The P.E./Biology Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Physical Education and Biology to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum. The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with physical fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills alongside scientific inquiry, laboratory, and analytical skills needed for academic advancement, healthy living, and future careers. The P.E./Biology Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture students’ physical wellbeing and confidence in the sciences within a Christ-centered learning environment.

Position Summary 

The P.E./Biology Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in Physical Education and Biology to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum. The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with physical fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills alongside scientific inquiry, laboratory, and analytical skills needed for academic advancement, healthy living, and future careers. The P.E./Biology Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture students’ physical wellbeing and confidence in the sciences within a Christ-centered learning environment. 

Key Responsibilities 

Curriculum Delivery & Instruction 

• Plan, prepare, and deliver Physical Education and Biology lessons in line with the national secondary curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus requirements. 

• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes (O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable). 

• Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong conceptual understanding of biological processes, human anatomy and physiology, and physical fitness/sports theory. 

• Use varied teaching methods, demonstrations, practical drills, and problem-solving activities to accommodate different learning styles and ability levels. 

• Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback. 

• Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support where needed. 

• Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments in Biology, ensuring full syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.

• Integrate health education, nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness, and injury prevention into P.E. and Biology lessons as guided by the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES). 

Practical, Laboratory & Sports Instruction 

• Plan and supervise Biology practical lessons and experiments in the school laboratory, in line with UNEB practical examination requirements. 

• Guide students in the safe and correct use of laboratory apparatus, specimens, and equipment. 

• Plan, organize, and supervise P.E. lessons, athletics training, team sports, and games sessions on the school field/court. 

• Maintain laboratory equipment as well as sports equipment and playing fields/facilities, and coordinate with school administration on procurement of supplies. 

• Ensure health and safety standards are observed during all laboratory, practical, and sports/physical activities, including basic first aid readiness. 

• Organize inter-house and inter-school sports competitions, athletics days, science fairs, or STEM/sports-related activities that reinforce learning with real-world application. 

Student Guidance & Mentorship 

• Mentor students interested in sports, physical training, health sciences, and STEM-related career paths, including further studies. 

• Coach and prepare school sports teams for inter-school, zonal, and national competitions. 

• Encourage participation in science clubs, sports clubs, competitions, and academic/athletic exhibitions. 

• Provide guidance and support to students struggling with Biology concepts or physical fitness goals, including extra tuition or training where needed. 

• Model discipline, sportsmanship, curiosity, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence in both physical fitness and the sciences. 

Resource & Records Management 

• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, fitness assessments, and continuous assessment in line with school policy. 

• Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for textbooks, laboratory materials, sports equipment, and teaching aids. 

• Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control of laboratory equipment, sports gear, textbooks, and instructional materials. 

Teamwork & Collaboration 

• Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align academic planning. 

• Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events. 

• Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities related to sports, health, agriculture, and environmental stewardship. 

• Engage parents and the local community in supporting students’ physical wellbeing and practical science learning where appropriate. 

Other Duties 

• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise. 

What We’re Looking For 

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with Physical Education and Biology as teaching subjects, or a related field. 

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably teaching Physical Education and/or Biology. 

• Sound knowledge of the national secondary P.E. and Biology curriculum, UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines. 

• Practical experience conducting Biology laboratory demonstrations/experiments and coaching or officiating school sports. 

• Registered/licensed with the relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable (e.g., valid Teaching Practice Certificate/registration with the Ministry of Education and Sports). 

• A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education. 

Behavioral Competencies 

• Passionate about teaching and mentoring young people in science and physical fitness. 

• Patient, clear, and skilled at breaking down complex or abstract concepts for learners at different levels. 

• Strong organizational and time-management skills, balancing lesson planning, marking, practical sessions, and sports training/coaching. 

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and parents. 

• High level of integrity, responsibility, and accountability for school resources, including laboratory and sports equipment. 

• Collaborative team player who contributes positively to the wider school community. • Physically fit and able to actively demonstrate and participate in sports and physical activities. 

Technical Competencies 

• Strong command of Biology subject content across the secondary curriculum and sound knowledge of physical education theory and practice. 

• Skilled in practical/laboratory instruction, demonstration techniques, and experiment supervision. • Skilled in sports coaching, training program design, and officiating of games and athletics. • Competent in lesson planning, assessment design, and academic record-keeping. • Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids for lesson preparation and delivery. • Capable of maintaining a safe, organized, and functional laboratory and sports environment.
