Job Purpose
The Farm Field Operations Assistant supports the Farm Manager by translating production plans into timely, high-quality field activities, coordinating labour, machinery, inputs and other resources efficiently, and ensuring operations are completed safely, productively, within budget and in line with the farm’s production and profitability objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop weekly, monthly and annual field activity plans based on the farm production calendar.
- Translate crop management plans into specific field activities, work schedules and labour requirements.
- Coordinate activities such as planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, spraying, fertilization, harvesting and post-harvest field activities.
- Ensure activities are scheduled according to crop requirements, weather conditions and available resources.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and take corrective action promptly.
- Support plans for labour requirements for field activities
- Verify attendance and work completed before submitting labour records for payment.
- Conduct regular field inspections to monitor work quality and progress.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed by block, crop and activity.
- Prepare field input requirements based on approved farm plans.
- Coordinate with the stores/procurement team to ensure inputs are available when required.
- Monitor the use of fertilizers, chemicals, planting materials and other inputs.
- Ensure field equipment and tools are properly maintained and available when needed.
- Reconcile harvested quantities against field estimates where applicable.
- Ensure workers follow farm health and safety procedures.
- Monitor safe storage and handling of agricultural chemicals.
- Report accidents, injuries, chemical exposure and other incidents immediately.
- Ensure environmentally responsible use of chemicals, water and other farm resources.
- Maintain safe working conditions across field operations.
- Request farm inputs and equipment required for approved activities.
- Escalate operational, agronomic or resource problems to the Farm Manager.
- Submit daily, weekly and monthly operational reports to the Managing Director.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Agribusiness, Farm Management, Crop Production or a related field.
- Good understanding of crop production and farm operations.
- Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
- Strong work ethic and integrity
- Ability to speak multiple languages especially Lusoga is strongly desired
- Experience in farm field operations, preferably in commercial agriculture is desirable
Working Conditions
The role is field-based and requires regular movement across the farm. The assistant should be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and interacting directly with field workers and supervisors. The position may require early starts, extended working hours during planting and harvesting periods, and work on weekends or public holidays when operational requirements demand it.
