Job summary
As an Enrolled Midwife at AsOne Ministries, your role goes beyond assisting at deliveries. You will be responsible for providing safe, competent, and compassionate basic midwifery care to women and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period at the AsOne clinic, working under the supervision of the Registered Midwife and Clinical Officer, and delivering excellent, Christ-centered customer care to every client you serve. You are expected to uphold the professional code of conduct for midwives as set by the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council. Job descriptions & requirements
Clinical & Client Care Responsibilities
• Receive and welcome expectant mothers, and assist with antenatal assessments, including taking vital signs,
weight, and basic fetal monitoring.
• Assist the Registered Midwife or Clinical Officer during labor and delivery, providing supportive care to
mothers throughout the birthing process.
• Provide basic postnatal care to mothers and newborns under supervision, monitoring recovery and reporting
any concerns promptly.
• Assist with immediate newborn care, including keeping the baby warm, supporting initiation of breastfeeding,
and basic newborn checks.
• Support family planning clinics by preparing clients, assisting with counseling sessions, and helping with
method provision under supervision.
• Assist in recognizing signs of obstetric complications or emergencies, promptly alerting the Registered
Midwife or Clinical Officer.
• Support antenatal and postnatal education sessions on nutrition, hygiene, immunization, and newborn care.
• Assist with cervical cancer screening, HIV counseling and testing, and other maternal health services as
directed by senior staff.
• Provide holistic care that integrates physical, emotional, and spiritual support, including prayer with clients
where appropriate and welcomed.
• Follow infection prevention and control protocols strictly during deliveries and all clinical procedures.
Administrative Responsibilities
• Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including antenatal cards, delivery registers, and postnatal
records, under supervision.
• Assist in completing daily and weekly maternal health returns and statistics for submission to the Registered
Midwife or Clinic Manager.
• Support the monitoring of stock levels of midwifery supplies, drugs, and delivery kits, and flag shortages or
expiring items to senior staff.
• Assist in the proper use, cleaning, sterilization, and safe storage of midwifery and delivery equipment.
• Support the scheduling and coordination of antenatal, delivery, and postnatal appointments under supervision.
• Ensure compliance with clinic policies, national health regulations, and data protection standards in all
record-keeping and client interactions.
• Assist in preparing the clinic environment and documentation for inspections, audits, or visits by health
authorities or partners.
Customer Care & Client Experience
• Welcome and attend to every client with warmth, respect, dignity, and patience, regardless of background or
circumstance.
• Communicate clearly and kindly with mothers and families about their care during pregnancy, labor, and after
delivery, ensuring they feel heard and respected.
• Maintain a calm, reassuring, and friendly demeanor, especially with anxious, distressed, or first-time mothers
and their families.
• Respect clients' birth preferences and cultural values wherever safely possible, and support them in feeling
involved in their own care.
• Help manage client flow in antenatal, labor, and postnatal areas to minimize delays and reduce client and
family frustration.
• Listen to client and family concerns or complaints with empathy and professionalism, promptly referring them
to the Registered Midwife or Clinical Officer for resolution.
• Protect client confidentiality and privacy at all times, particularly around sensitive matters such as HIV status
and reproductive health choices.
• Follow up with mothers and newborns as directed after delivery or referral to support continuity of care and
client satisfaction.
• Model Christ-like compassion and encouragement in every client interaction, reinforcing AsOne's holistic,
people-first approach to maternal care.
Collaborative & Team Duties
• Work closely with the Registered Midwife, Clinical Officer, nurses, lab technicians, and community health
workers to ensure coordinated maternal and newborn care.
• Participate in clinical team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement discussions.
• Support and learn from senior midwifery staff, embracing supervision and mentorship as part of professional
growth.
• Engage respectfully with community health volunteers and partner organizations supporting the clinic's
maternal health outreach programs.
• Participate in staff devotions, fellowships, and outreach initiatives as part of the AsOne community.
Professional Development
• Reflect on midwifery practice and pursue continuous personal and professional growth.
• Attend continuing nursing/midwifery education (CNE/CME) sessions and maintain up-to-date licensing and
certification.
• Stay current with basic midwifery best practices and national maternal health guidelines relevant to the
community served.
Other Duties
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Registered Midwife, Clinical Officer, or administration as needs
arise.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Education: Certificate in Enrolled Midwifery from a recognized and accredited institution.
• Registration: Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
• Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of midwifery experience, preferably in a primary care, rural, or community
health setting.
• Subject Proficiency: Solid understanding of basic antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, and common
maternal and newborn health concerns.
Technical Competencies
• Proficient in basic midwifery procedures, vital signs monitoring, and supervised support during deliveries.
• Good record-keeping and reporting skills, with willingness to learn basic health information systems (e.g.,
HMIS/DHIS2).
• Sound knowledge of infection prevention and control, and safe handling of medical and delivery supplies.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a strong customer care orientation.
• Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure and under supervision, including during emergencies
and night shifts.
• Basic computer literacy for reporting and record management is an added advantage.
• Capable of creating a safe, dignified, and nurturing environment for mothers, newborns, and families.
