Key Responsibilities
Safe Transportation of Students & Staff
• Safely drive the school coaster and van to transport students, staff, and visitors to and from school, home,
field trips, sports events, church activities, and other authorized destinations.
• Follow designated routes and schedules for daily student pick-up and drop-off, adjusting only with
approval from the Head Teacher or Director of Operations.
• Drive at safe, controlled speeds at all times, strictly observing Uganda traffic laws, road signs, and school
policy on child transportation.
• Ensure all passengers, especially children, are seated safely and securely before moving the vehicle, and
that doors are properly closed and locked while in motion.
• Assist children, especially younger or nursery-age learners, in safely boarding and alighting the vehicle at
each stop.
• Maintain calm, disciplined order among passengers during transit, and report any behavioural concerns to
the relevant teacher or the Director of Studies.
• Never leave children unattended in the vehicle at any time, and conduct a full check of the vehicle after
every trip to ensure no child is left behind.
Vehicle Care & Maintenance
• Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the coaster and van, checking tyres, brakes, lights,
mirrors, fuel, oil, water, and overall roadworthiness before every journey.
• Keep the interior and exterior of both vehicles clean, tidy, and presentable at all times.
• Promptly report any mechanical faults, damage, or safety concerns to the Director of Operations and
ensure vehicles are not driven if unsafe.
• Coordinate and schedule routine servicing, repairs, and maintenance for both vehicles in line with the
manufacturer's recommended schedule and school policy.
• Ensure the vehicles' insurance, road licence, inspection stickers, and other statutory documents are valid
and up to date, flagging renewal deadlines to the Director of Operations in good time.
• Maintain an accurate logbook recording mileage, fuel consumption, trips undertaken, and any incidents
for both vehicles.
Safety, Compliance & Emergency Response
• Hold and maintain a valid driving permit in Classes D and D1 (covering the school coaster and van) and
ensure it remains valid throughout employment.
• Carry out all duties in strict compliance with Ugandan traffic laws and any school transport safety policies.
• Maintain a valid first aid kit and fire extinguisher in each vehicle and know how to use them in the event of
an emergency.
• Respond calmly and appropriately to breakdowns, accidents, or emergencies, prioritizing the safety of all
passengers and promptly notifying the Director of Operations and, where relevant, parents/guardians.
• Avoid the use of a mobile phone or any other distraction while driving, except for hands-free emergency
communication.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or any substance that could impair judgment or reaction time.
Administrative & Collaborative Duties
• Coordinate daily transport schedules with the Head Teacher, Director of Operations, and relevant
teachers to ensure timely pick-up and drop-off of students.
• Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents, guardians, and school staff regarding transport
timing, delays, or changes.
• Assist with the loading, transport, and unloading of school materials, supplies, or equipment as needed,
alongside student transport duties.
• Support school trips, outreach programs, sports events, and other off-site activities by providing safe
transport for students and staff.
• Report any recurring transport issues, safety concerns, or improvement suggestions to the Director of
Operations.
Other Duties
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Teacher or administration as needs arise.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Education: A minimum of an O-Level certificate; further training in defensive driving or vehicle mechanics
is an added advantage.
• A valid driving permit in Classes D and D1, covering the school coaster and van, with a clean driving
record.
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience, with proven experience driving
coaster buses or similar passenger vehicles; experience transporting school children is highly desirable.
• Working knowledge of Ugandan traffic laws, road safety regulations, and basic vehicle maintenance.
Competencies & Attributes
• Calm, patient, and responsible disposition, especially when transporting children.
• Strong sense of punctuality, discipline, and reliability.
• Good knowledge of local roads, routes, and communities served by the school.
• Basic mechanical knowledge to identify vehicle faults and carry out simple checks.
• Calm under pressure, with the ability to handle emergencies or breakdowns responsibly.
• High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism, particularly regarding the safety and wellbeing of
children.
