Position Summary
The Loan Officer is a frontline role responsible for appraising, disbursing, and monitoring individual micro asset finance loans. The Loan Officer will maintain a healthy, growing portfolio while delivering excellent client service, with a particular focus on agricultural and rural clients. This role requires sound credit judgement, strong relationship-building skills, and a genuine commitment to financial inclusion.
Key Responsibilities
● Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with clients, ensuring a positive experience at every touchpoint.
● Carry out individual loan appraisals by means of phone interviews and other innovative means, including reference and CRB checks.
● Assess repayment capacity through analysis of farm and business income and household income and expenses; prepare accurate credit analyses in line with in24 policies and procedures.
● Present loan recommendations to the credit committee with clear, evidence-based justification.
● Disburse approved loans and ensure clients fully understand repayment schedules and obligations.
● Monitor portfolio quality proactively, including regular follow-up with clients and early intervention on at-risk accounts; Maintain portfolio at or below agreed PAR (Portfolio at Risk) targets.
● Uphold ethical standards and responsible lending practices at all times.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
● Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Microfinance, Agriculture, Economics, Education or a related field. A diploma with strong relevant experience will be considered.
Experience
● Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in individual micro lending, including loan appraisal, disbursement, monitoring, and collections.
● Demonstrated experience lending to agricultural clients, including smallholder farmers and agri-based micro-enterprises.
● Proven track record of maintaining a healthy loan portfolio with low delinquency rates.
Skills & Competencies
● Strong analytical and numeracy skills, with the ability to conduct household, business and farm cash flow analysis with attention to detail.
● Understanding of agricultural production cycles, seasonal income patterns, and related risks.
● Team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English and at least two local languages.
● Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office, mobile data tools, MIS platforms).
● Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
● Persistence, resilience, and a reflective mindset: the ability to learn from setbacks and continuously improve, rather than attributing difficulties to external factors.
● Genuine curiosity about people — their lives, livelihoods, and circumstances — and the ability to build real understanding through listening and engagement.
