The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor is responsible for the implementation and ongoing management of HSW systems, programs, and compliance activities across UWA India campuses. The role provides advisory support to managers and employees, ensures compliance with applicable legislation, and contributes to a safe, healthy, and supportive working environment for all staff.
The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor supports UWA India's dual accountability to Indian regulatory requirements and UWA's institutional HSW standards, and embeds consistent HSW practices across a geographically dispersed workforce.
Your Key Responsibilities
The position undertakes the following duties:

  • Conduct workplace risk assessments and hazard identification across campuses, maintaining the risk register and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure physical workplace standards are met across all sites in accordance with the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSHWC) Code 2020, including ventilation, lighting, sanitation, and drinking water.
  • Investigate workplace incidents and near misses, identify root causes, and report to regulators in accordance with statutory requirements.
  • Coordinate annual health checks for eligible staff and maintain associated health records in compliance with the OSHWC Code and the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023.
  • Administer and maintain the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act 2013, ensuring appropriate composition, and managing the end-to-end complaints process within the 90-day statutory timeframe.
  • Coordinate SHe-Box portal registration and complaint tracking and prepare the annual IC report to support board-level disclosure obligations.
  • Liaise with managers and senior leadership to identify, schedule, and coordinate mandatory health, safety, statutory compliance and other training for employees, ensuring completion in accordance with legislative and institutional requirements.
  • Coordinate the nomination, appointment, induction, and ongoing administration of members for statutory and institutional committees, including the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee, Emergency Response/Warden Teams, and First Aid Officers, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and University governance requirements.
  • Design and deliver annual POSH awareness and training programs for all staff, ensuring content reflects current legislative requirements including amendments.
  • Develop, maintain, and review emergency response plans, warden structures, first aid resources, and evacuation procedures, and coordinate regular emergency drills.
  • Design and coordinate staff wellbeing initiatives, including mental health awareness, ergonomics, fatigue management, and health promotion activities.
  • Support Employee Assistance Program (EAP) awareness and assist managers with early intervention and return-to-work support following illness or injury.
  • Develop and deliver HSW induction programs and ongoing training for staff and managers across campuses.
  • Collect, analyse, and report HSW performance metrics in accordance with institutional reporting requirements.
  • Maintain all HSW records, compliance registers, and documentation.
  • Monitor changes to legislation and proactively advise leadership on emerging compliance obligations.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Essential
Your specific work capabilities (selection criteria)

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in occupational health and safety, human resources, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indian workplace health and safety legislation, including the OSHWC Code 2020 and POSH Act 2013.
  • Proven experience developing and implementing HSW systems, programs, and risk management processes.
  • Experience administering POSH compliance obligations, including ICC administration and complaints handling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence and build effective working relationships across a dispersed, multi-location workforce.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate compliance documentation, registers, and management reports.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently with limited supervision.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with occupational health and safety management system standards.
  • Understanding of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023 as it applies to employee health data.
  • Experience working within a higher education or multi-site international environment.
