Business Accountant
Job summary
To manage day-to-day financial accounting operations, ensure accurate recording of transactions, support financial planning and analysis, maintain strong internal controls, and deliver timely, reliable financial information to support business decisions, regulatory compliance, and portfolio growth while minimizing financial risks.

- Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounts using the company’s accounting system
- Record all transactions related to loan disbursements, repayments, interest income, fees, and provisions for the core products, e.g., Stock Financing, School Fees Financing, Invoice Discounting.
- Perform daily/weekly reconciliations of bank accounts, mobile money wallets, cash, and loan portfolio ledgers.
- Manage accounts of payable, receivable, payroll, and statutory deductions (NSSF, PAYE, VAT, withholding tax).
- Ensure timely payment of suppliers, service providers, and local authorities.
- Manage staff payroll and remittances
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management accounts, and product-specific performance reports, e.g., income by product line, portfolio yield, and cost of funds.
- Analyze financial data, including variance analysis between actual vs. budget, product profitability, and key trends in disbursements and collections
- Support the preparation of regulatory reports for UMRA, URA, and any other statutory bodies.
- Generate ad-hoc reports for management on cash flow, working capital, and financial health of the lending portfolio.
- Review of monthly stock records from credit offers and reconciling with respective ledgers
- Develop and monitor the annual budget and periodic forecasts tracking
- Track actual performance against budget and provide explanations for variances, with recommendations for corrective actions.
- Support product-level costing and pricing analysis, like interest margins, discount rates, and risk-adjusted returns for each financing product.
- Ensure full compliance with Ugandan accounting standards, tax laws, financial institutions regulations, and internal policies.
- Maintain strong internal controls over financial transactions, especially around loan disbursements, collections, and collateral management.
- Support external and internal audits by preparing schedules, responding to queries, and implementing audit recommendations.
- Monitor and report on financial risks, including credit provisions, liquidity, and foreign exchange exposure.
- Track and account for loan portfolio movements like disbursements, repayments, early settlements, restructurings, and write-offs across the core products.
- Calculate and account for interest accruals, impairment provisions using expected credit loss or similar models, and fees.
- Reconcile loan management system data with the general ledger on a regular basis.
- Work closely with Credit Officers, Collections, Operations, and Business Development teams to resolve accounting queries and improve processes.
- Identify opportunities to automate accounting workflows and enhance reporting accuracy.
- Provide financial advisory and training to non-finance staff on budgeting, expense control, and product profitability.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Professional qualification: CPA (Uganda), ACCA, or equivalent (part-qualified candidates with strong experience may be considered).
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a microfinance institution, non-bank financial institution, or lending company in Uganda.
- Hands-on experience with loan portfolio accounting, interest income recognition, and provisioning.
- Proficiency in accounting software, advanced Microsoft Excel - pivot tables, financial modeling, VLOOKUP, and Google Workspace-Microsoft 365.
- Sound knowledge of Ugandan tax laws, UMRA regulations, and IFRS
- Strong analytical, attention-to-detail, and communication skills with high integrity and ability to work under pressure.
