The Senior Fleet and Transportation Operations Manager is responsible for managing the transportation and logistics operations, leading the team, managing the vehicles and fleet while ensuring safety and compliance to a number of standards and policies.
Job descriptions & requirements
- Oversee the daily management, task allocation, performance evaluation, and skill development of the transportation department team.
- Recruit, train, motivate, and retain key talent to build a highly efficient, professional, and dedicated core operations team.
- Establish clear communication channels and reporting mechanisms to ensure team objectives are aligned with company strategy.
- Develop and implement comprehensive preventive maintenance and repair programs to ensure all vehicles remain in optimal operating condition.
- Manage fleet assets (trucks, trailers, etc.), monitor vehicle utilization, fuel efficiency, and lifecycle costs to optimize return on assets.
- Oversee all compliance-related activities for vehicles, including insurance, road tax, annual inspections, and regulations of the Kenya Regulatory.
- Plan, coordinate, and monitor all transportation tasks to ensure goods are delivered on time, safely, and undamaged to customer-specified locations.
- Optimize transport routes and dispatch schedules to maximize operational efficiency and control costs (fuel, tires, tolls, etc.).
- Manage relationships with key customers, suppliers, and partners, and address ad-hoc operational issues and customer complaints.
- Act as the company’s primary safety officer by promoting and maintaining the highest Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) standards.
- Ensure all operations strictly comply with national transport regulations, labor laws, and industry standards in Kenya.
- Lead accident investigations, implement corrective measures, and conduct regular driver safety training sessions.
- Proven Team Management Experience: Must possess a minimum of 3 years of experience directly managing teams of 5 or more members. Demonstrated excellence in leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to effectively motivate diverse teams is essential.
- Professional Vehicle & Transport Management Expertise: Must have in-depth knowledge of fleet management (including vehicle maintenance, Transportation Management Systems - TMS, and cost control) and transport logistics operations (including route planning, dispatch, and third-party supplier management). Familiarity with the technical specifications of heavy commercial vehicles will be a distinct advantage.
- 3. 5+ Years of Industry Experience: A minimum of 5 years of cumulative relevant work experience in the transportation, logistics, or supply chain management sectors is required, of which at least 3 years must have been in a managerial capacity.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make decisive judgments in high-pressure environments.
- Result-driven with a strong attention to detail, possessing robust organisational and project management capabilities.
- In-depth understanding of the local Kenyan business environment, transportation regulations, and cultural context.
