1. BACKGROUND
The IDI Uganda (KOICA) Project supports vocational training for persons with disabilities and promotes disability awareness across western Uganda. The project is sponsored by the Korean Government. Operating from the Fort Portal Field Office, the project covers three districts – Kasese, Bunyangabu, and Bundibugyo – and works through three vocational training schools: Hakitenya Community Polytechnic (HCP), Kasese Youth Polytechnic (KYP), and Kisomoro Technical Institute (KTI).
Field operations require reliable and safe transportation for project staff, materials, and equipment across diverse and often rural terrain. The project, therefore, seeks to engage a professional and responsible Driver based at the Fort Portal Field Office.
2. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of project staff, authorised visitors, and project materials across the project’s operational districts. The role also encompasses the care and maintenance of the project vehicle, accurate fleet record-keeping, and adherence to all road safety and organisational transport policies. The Driver is a representative of the project in the field and is expected to conduct themselves with professionalism and integrity at all times.
3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1 Transportation and Field Operations
- Drive project staff and authorised visitors safely to field locations, meetings, schools, and other approved destinations within and across the project districts.
- Assist in the delivery and secure transportation of project materials, equipment, and supplies to vocational training schools and community sites.
- Support basic logistical tasks when needed, especially during field activities, training sessions, or community events.
- Follow all road safety regulations, traffic laws, and the organisation’s transport policies at all times.
3.2 Vehicle Maintenance and Care
- Maintain the project vehicle in excellent working condition through regular pre-trip and post-trip checks, scheduled servicing, and daily cleanliness.
- Report any mechanical faults, defects, or safety concerns promptly to the Administration Officer and coordinate with authorised garages for required repairs.
- Ensure that the vehicle camera (dash cam) is switched on and fully operational throughout all duty trips without exception.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshoot minor mechanical problems in the field where safe and practicable to do so.
3.3 Fleet Records and Compliance
- Keep accurate and timely records of all vehicle movements, mileage, fuel usage, and any incidents or accidents in the official vehicle logbook.
- Ensure that all vehicle documents are current, complete, and readily available at all times, including insurance, road licence, registration, and any required permits.
- Report any traffic incidents, accidents, or near-misses immediately to the Administration Officer and assist in completing any required incident documentation.
3.4 Professional Conduct and Project Values
- Uphold the mission, values, and reputation of the KOICA Project while engaging respectfully with project staff, beneficiaries, community members, and all other stakeholders.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding project operations, staff movements, and any sensitive information encountered in the course of duty.
- Demonstrate punctuality, reliability, and a service-oriented attitude in all duties.
4. REQUIRED PROFILE
4.1 Licence and Driving Experience
- Valid Ugandan driving licence, preferably Class B or higher.
- At least five (5) years of professional driving experience, ideally in a development organisation, NGO, or community-based project environment.
- Strong knowledge of local road networks in Kasese, Bunyangabu, and Bundibugyo Districts, as well as familiarity with the main highway route to Kampala, with confidence navigating hill and rural terrain.
- Clean driving record with no history of major traffic incidents or violations.
4.2 Technical and Personal Skills
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance checks and troubleshoot minor mechanical problems.
- Good communication skills and a respectful, service-oriented attitude towards staff, beneficiaries, and visitors.
- High level of reliability, honesty, and punctuality.
- Willingness to work in remote field settings and occasionally beyond regular working hours when operational demands require.
- Familiarity with safeguarding principles and a commitment to upholding them in the course of all duties is an added advantage.
- Certificate of Secondary Education (UCE) as a minimum; additional training in driving, vehicle maintenance, or logistics is an advantage.
