Job Purpose
The role holder will drive profitable growth of Britam Uganda’s agricultural insurance portfolio by identifying and converting business opportunities across agricultural value chains, developing strategic partnerships, supporting suitable product solutions, and providing technical business-development support to all distribution channels. The role will build Britam’s presence among farmers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, government agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders while ensuring sound portfolio quality, regulatory compliance, and excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute an agriculture business-development plan aligned with the company’s strategy and approved premium, revenue, and profitability targets.
- Identify, prospect, and convert agricultural insurance opportunities across crop, livestock, aquaculture, forestry, agricultural assets, and related value chains.
- Build and manage strategic relationships with farmers’ organisations, cooperatives, agribusinesses, banks, SACCOs, microfinance institutions, input suppliers, off-takers, government agencies, development partners, brokers, and other distribution partners.
- Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of agriculture business and provide accurate forecasts on opportunities, premium income, conversion, and renewal performance.
- Work with Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Risk, and Reinsurance teams to design, review, price, and refine customer-centred agricultural insurance solutions.
- Coordinate the preparation and timely submission of quotations, proposals, tenders, expressions of interest, and partnership agreements relating to agricultural insurance.
- Provide product and technical support to branches, agents, brokers, bancassurance partners, and other sales channels to improve lead generation, conversion, cross-selling, and retention.
- Conduct market research and value-chain analysis to identify emerging risks, customer needs, competitor activity, and opportunities arising from climate-resilience and agricultural-financing initiatives.
- Coordinate client onboarding, policy issuance, premium collection, renewals, endorsements, and service follow-up in collaboration with relevant internal teams.
- Support risk surveys, farmer registration, data collection, sensitisation, training, and claims-related stakeholder coordination as required.
- Monitor portfolio performance, including premium growth, loss ratios, receivables, renewals, and profitability, and recommend corrective action where necessary.
- Ensure all agricultural business is developed and managed in accordance with company policies, underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and applicable partnership or programme standards.
- Prepare timely weekly, monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reports on business-development activity, pipeline performance, partnerships, portfolio results, and market developments.
- Represent Britam at relevant agricultural forums, stakeholder meetings, exhibitions, field activities, and industry engagements; deliver the requirements in the departmental strategy map and personal scorecard; and perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

- Achievement of agriculture Gross Written Premium, revenue, and profitability targets.
- Growth and quality of the agriculture business pipeline and conversion rate.
- Number and value of productive strategic partnerships established and maintained.
- Portfolio quality, including loss ratio, premium collection, receivables, and renewal/retention performance.
- Timeliness and quality of quotations, proposals, tenders, policy documentation, and management reports.
- Level of distribution-channel support, training, and agriculture product uptake.
- Customer satisfaction and timely resolution of client and partner queries.
Knowledge, Experience And Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Business Administration, Marketing, Insurance, Finance, or another relevant field.
- A professional insurance qualification or relevant certification in DIU, COP, CII, agriculture OR agribusiness.
- Three to five years’ relevant experience in business development, agricultural insurance, agribusiness, agricultural finance, or a related financial-services role.
- Demonstrated understanding of Uganda’s agricultural value chains, agricultural risks, climate-related risks, and the needs of farmers and agribusinesses.
- Proven ability to originate business, manage partnerships, prepare proposals, and achieve sales or premium targets.
- Experience engaging government institutions, financial institutions, cooperatives, development partners, and farmer organisations is desirable.
- Good understanding of general insurance principles, underwriting, claims, and regulatory requirements; direct agricultural insurance experience is an added advantage.
- Strong analytical, report-writing, presentation, negotiation, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and relevant digital reporting or customer-management tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly to farming communities and project locations across Uganda.
