Senior Agronomist – Greenhouse & Open Field Vegetable Production
Job summary
We are seeking a highly experienced and results-driven Agronomist to lead and manage both greenhouse and open-field vegetable production. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in commercial greenhouse systems and open-field farming, with a particular focus on sweet pepper (capsicum) and other high-value vegetables.

Key Responsibilities:
Production & Agronomy
- Plan, manage, and optimise greenhouse and open-field vegetable production cycles, with a strong focus on sweet pepper.
- Develop and implement crop calendars, planting schedules, and harvest plans.
- Oversee all agronomic practices, including land preparation, transplanting, pruning, trellising, irrigation, fertigation, and harvesting.
- Monitor crop growth, yields, and quality, and implement corrective actions where required.
Greenhouse Management
- Manage greenhouse climate control (temperature, humidity, ventilation, shading).
- Design and implement fertigation programs based on crop stage, EC, and pH requirements.
- Ensure optimal use of substrates, growing media, and irrigation systems.
- Supervise grafting, nursery management, and seedling production where applicable.
Pest, Disease & Nutrition Management
- Develop and execute Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for both greenhouse and open field.
- Diagnose nutrient deficiencies, pest infestations, and disease outbreaks and apply appropriate control measures.
- Ensure safe, effective, and compliant use of agrochemicals.
- Maintain records of pesticide, fertiliser, and input usage.
Team Leadership & Training
- Supervise and train farm supervisors, technicians, and field workers.
- Build capacity within the farm team through hands-on training and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Enforce good agricultural practices (GAP), hygiene, and safety standards.
Yield Optimisation & Reporting
- Track production data including yields, losses, input costs, and labour efficiency.
- Prepare regular agronomy and production reports for management.
- Recommend innovations, technologies, and best practices to improve productivity and reduce costs.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure compliance with food safety standards, export requirements, and certification schemes where applicable (e.g., GlobalG.A.P.).
- Maintain traceability and production records suitable for audits and inspections.
Qualifications & Experience
Mandatory Requirements
- College diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Horticulture, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5–7 years’ proven experience managing commercial vegetable production.
- Strong hands-on experience in greenhouse vegetable production, lovely pepper.
- Practical experience in open-field vegetable farming.
- Solid understanding of fertigation, EC/pH management, and irrigation systems.
Preferred Requirements
- Postgraduate qualification in Agronomy or Horticulture.
- Experience managing large-scale or export-oriented farms.
- Familiarity with East African growing conditions is an advantage.
