Director of Liturgical Music (Christ King Parish, Wauwatosa, WI)
Christ King Parish in Wauwatosa (a suburb of Milwaukee), Wisconsin, seeks a highly qualified Director of Liturgical Music. The Director of Liturgical Music is a full-time professional parish staff member. The Director of Liturgical Music is the principal organist, pianist, and choir director, collaborating closely with the Pastor and the Director of Liturgy. The Director of Liturgical music is responsible for the preparation, rehearsal, and execution of sacred liturgical music at all weekend Masses, daily Masses during the week in which the parish school children attend, Holy Days of Obligation, Weddings, Funerals, and other prayer events.
The right applicant will be comfortable in a wide range of musical genres and styles appropriate to sacred worship in the Roman Catholic Church.
The right applicant will join a growing and dynamic parish focused on worship, evangelization, and care for the poor. The parish has a capable and positive staff environment and the highest-quality musical assets, including bells, three high-quality pianos, a new sound system, and a new parish organ (Juget-Sinclair Opus 52).
- Provide music, musicians, and musical instruments for all Sunday Masses and other major celebrations, including funerals, weddings, ecclesiastical feasts, and civil holidays.
- Play at least one daily Mass, including the parish school Mass during the school year.
- Act as primary musician/consultant for marriage ceremonies.
- Act as primary musician/consultant for funeral liturgies.
- Act as musical planner and primary musician for special events, such as school graduation service, etc.
- Develop/Direct Parish Ensembles.

- Handbell Choir
- Other groups according to employee skills and parishioner involvement.
- Recruit, audition, and supervise cantors for services.
- Develop parish musical repertoire and encourage active participation of parish community.
- Facilitate musical/spiritual opportunities for ensembles.
- Collaborate, when appropriate, with musicians from other parishes.
- Work with school children and religious education students in developing an interest and involvement in music ministry.
- Serve as staff liaison to Prayer and Worship standing committee.
- Serve as leader in preservation and acquisition of new parish musical assets. Work with pastor and other parties in parish fund raising campaigns.
- Develop and adhere to budget.
- Actively collaborate with the Director of Liturgy and provide support when necessary.
- Serve as a backup to Director of Liturgy when needed.
- Develop opportunities to form and educate parish on the role and importance of sacred music with parish life.
- Attend regular staff meetings and other parish events as requested.
- All other duties as requested.
Qualifications
- College or post-graduate musical or theological degree, or relevant background. Experience in parish ministry preferred.
- High facility with organ required.
- Positive verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with modern technology tools.
- Must work in a positive and supportive way in a parish staff.
- Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church. This position's duties and requirements are ministerial and include participating in Mass, prayer, and leading others in prayer, as appropriate. These duties are central to our mission as a Catholic parish. The employee is expected to know and act consistently in accordance with the mission, policies, and tenets of the Catholic Church and the Code of Ethical Standards for Church Leaders. The employee is further expected to perform all duties and responsibilities with an overriding commitment to develop our Catholic faith community in accordance with the doctrines, laws, and norms of the Catholic Church.
- Work schedule: the nature of the role includes nights, weekends, and short-term availability for funerals.
- Compliance with all Archdiocesan safe environment training and procedures
- Regularly updated criminal background check.
- Agreement to and compliance with Archdiocesan Code of Ethical Standards for Church Leaders
- Participation in continuing formation opportunities.
