Job Description/Requirements

Department: Operations.
Reports To: Head of Operations.


Job Purpose:
To design functional, aesthetic, and customer-centered interior solutions that integrate the company’s furniture products, ensuring alignment with client requirements, industry standards, and the organisation’s design quality benchmarks.


Key Roles & Responsibilities (Role Profile)
A. Furniture & Interior Concept Development
  • Develop interior design concepts and layouts for residential, office, commercial, and institutional spaces.
  • Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D renderings integrating the company’s furniture products.
  • Recommend furniture styles, materials, colors, and finishing options suitable for client needs.

B. Client Engagement & Requirements Analysis
  • Conduct client consultations to understand design expectations, budgets, timelines, and space functionality.
  • Present design proposals, mood boards, and samples for client approval.
  • Advise on interior design trends, space optimization, ergonomics, and material durability.

C. Technical Design & Production Coordination
  • Prepare technical specifications and material lists as per approved designs.
  • Work closely with carpenters, production teams, metal fabricators, and upholsterers to ensure accurate interpretation of design requirements.
  • Conduct site measurements, assess project constraints, and provide installation guidance.

D. Quality Control & Project Supervision
  • Oversee site installations to ensure workmanship is aligned with design specifications.
  • Inspect furniture during production and assembly to maintain quality standards.
  • Identify and resolve design-related issues promptly to avoid project delays.

E. Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain design documentation including CAD drawings, material schedules, and project timelines.
  • Prepare weekly project progress reports for management.
  • Manage design files, portfolios, and client records.

F. Innovation & Design Improvement
  • Research emerging design trends, materials, sustainable furniture concepts, and technologies relevant to Uganda’s furniture industry.
  • Propose new furniture concepts and improvements to existing product lines.


Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
A. Delivery & Timeliness
  • 90% of projects delivered within agreed timelines
  • Turnaround time for design proposals
  • Number of revisions required per project

B. Quality & Accuracy
  • Accuracy level of measurements and technical drawings
  • Reduction in production errors linked to design
  • Client satisfaction ratings (design quality, functionality, aesthetics)

C. Client Engagement
  • Response time to client inquiries and design modifications
  • Conversion rate from design proposals to confirmed orders
  • Number of returning or referred clients attributed to design work

D. Innovation & Product Development
  • Number of new furniture concepts developed per quarter
  • Contribution to product improvement initiatives

E. Collaboration & Teamwork
  • Level of coordination with production, assembly, and installation teams
  • Adherence to internal workflows and reporting standards



Qualifications
Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Interior Design, Industrial Design, Architecture, Fine Arts, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in CAD software is an added advantage.


Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, 3Ds Max, or similar design software
  • Strong knowledge of furniture materials: wood, MDF, metal, upholstery, finishes, etc.
  • Ability to develop accurate technical drawings and 3D renderings
  • Understanding of interior lighting, space planning, color theory, and ergonomics
  • Knowledge of furniture production processes (carpentry, fabrication, upholstery)

Experience Requirements

  • 2–5 years of working experience as an Interior Designer, preferably in the furniture manufacturing, carpentry, or construction industry.
  • Proven portfolio of interior design and furniture projects.
  • Experience supervising installation teams is an added advantage.
  • Experience working with Ugandan clients or regional commercial project environments is desirable.
