Job Purpose: 
The Cost Accountant is responsible for all aspects of production cost analysis and inventory. S/he provides financial reporting to insiders, analysis, and insight to aid planning and commercial decision- making. 

Specific duties and responsibilities 
1) Develop and maintain a cost accounting system that ensures accurate costing. 
  • Study and collect data to determine costs of business activities such as raw material purchases, inventory, and labor.
  • Analyse changes in raw materials, manufacturing methods, and other major cost drivers to determine effects on the cost of products.
  • Track standard costs and ensure accuracy in the Bill of Materials (BOM's) 
2) Analyse actual manufacturing costs and prepare periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs. 

3) Prepare, analyze, and report monthly gross margin analysis by customer and product type. 

4) Produce daily production reports and report variances; 
  • Analyse variances and communicate challenges and opportunities to operations management.
  • Identify inefficiencies and areas where costs can be reduced and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Work closely with Production to resolve variances and adjust Bills of Materials (BOM's). 
5) Responsible for account reconciliation of physical inventories and cycle counts 
  • Prepare periodic inventory reserves reconciliation, analyzing inventory for risk, and monitoring with support from internal stakeholders. 
6) Prepares financial feasibility and profitability studies; evaluates financial dimensions of new company projects, new products, and main changes to processes. 

7) Participate in the preparation of the annual plant operating budget including standard product cost development, volume analysis, and raw material pricing analysis. 

8) Assist in month-end and year-end closing by analyzing inventory and preparing supplemental reports as needed. 

9) Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time. 


Minimum Job Requirements 
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Commerce (Accounting), Bachelor of Business Administration, or related field. A professional accounting qualification is an asset. 

Professional Experience: At least three (3) years' experience in a similar role in a manufacturing environment. 

Competencies: Solid understanding of manufacturing operations, inventory and cost accounting; Strong analytical, problem solving and creative thinking skills; Ability to analyse data, draw conclusions and provide insights that can help improve decision-making, ability to identify cost saving opportunities or streamline processes; Team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills; Meticulous organizational skills; Proficiency in Excel and significant hands-on experience using an integrated ERP system.
