If we look back at the ancient times, it is no secret that certain jobs were for only men. Thank goodness though, with the girl-child education among other campaigns; society has improved their mindsets and ways of thinking. Women can participate in almost any job.
Sadly, a few fields remain male dominated and there’s still this stigma among some women that they are not suitable for such jobs. For example, sports media, construction, emergency services, engineering, and technology jobs are still male dominated.
What happens then if you have a strong passion for a male dominated profession and you just don’t want to give up on that dream? If you are fortunate enough to actually get a job in that field you want; how do you excel, against all odds?
- First and foremost, be confident; “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid,” a famous theoretical physicist once said. Believe in yourself and give it your best.
- Stay relevant; You want to always be on top of your game, especially in the technology field. Always be updated about the latest news in your field, the latest technologies and if you need to update your skills and knowledge as well, don’t hesitate.
- Be a good team player; You can nail this by working on your ‘people’ skills. People skills include; understanding ourselves and moderating our responses, talking effectively and empathizing accurately, building relationships of trust, respect and productive interactions. Instead of being intimidated by your male colleagues if they are good at something and you are not, befriend them. Learn how they do their things and then do better; not in a manipulative way, but in a friendly and constructive way.
- Set goals; What do you want to achieve in this company/organization? When? How do you want to achieve it? Have a plan, prepare and don’t lose focus.
In conclusion, avoid being a door mat. You don’t want to be treated like trash by anyone, know your worth. Know your rights. If things like sexual abuse come in, fight for your rights.
Remember, the people who do more than they are paid for, will soon be paid for more than they do.
