Staff Writer
Founded in 2024, Arena Magazine (arenamag.com) is a high quality print magazine based in Austin, TX. Our mission is to tell the Great American Story of entrepreneurship, enterprise, and technology. Read our content here.
We’re a small but mighty team of ~6 moving fast to scale the content and the business.
About The Role
Arena Magazine is seeking an ambitious Staff Writer to help jumpstart our digital business. You will be one of of the main writers for Arena Magazine online and will help set the editorial vision for the company through your writing.
As Staff Writer, you will be responsible for conceiving, drafting, and posting both long form and short form stories that you find interesting. Early on, you will work closely with the team on story selection by pitching your ideas and writing the ones that are greenlit. The editor may always reserve the right to assign stories as needed, but the goal is to allow for broad latitude in selecting and writing your own stories after you ramp.
You will be expected to write multiple short pieces per day as well as work on longer form content in the background.
You must be comfortable helping edit columnists and guests pieces, and perform a variety of tasks that are outside the scope of the job description (this is a startup!).
You must have the ability to cultivate sources, build a network, and conduct interviews both formally and on background.
You are a strong writer and must be able to write clear prose.
You must be willing to engage with the audience in good faith.
You must be able to consistently hit deadlines.
You must be willing to work independently and with the growth team to maximize reach and influence.
You must be comfortable with ambiguity, the scope of this role is subject to change to meet the needs of the business as we grow.
You must be willing to work on newsletters and email products if and when needed.
You are a believer that more information and transparency is better. You do not believe in the traditional, gatekeeping and agenda setting mentality of the legacy press. You know that information, regardless of source, should be judged on its merits alone.
Ideally, you have experience writing. This can include working at a traditional outlet, writing in business or investing, posting on X, or any other type of writing that has allowed you to highlight your ability to distill complex ideas into simple ones, and tell a compelling story.
This role requires an independent thinker who believes in the Arena mission of telling The Great American Story. You must be able to go deep on a wide variety of topics quickly, while also being humble enough to fill in your gaps of knowledge. Arena is not in the Gell-Mann Amnesia business.
This role will require working hard and with availability at most times during the day.
There may be an option to do multimedia content.
We have a strong preference for Austin, TX based or willingness to move to Austin.
You!
- Experience: At least 1-3 years of experience writing, as defined above
- Fan of Arena: You already enjoy Arena! Liking the content and our vibe is going to be key to a successful role here
- Self-Starter: Don’t need to be asked to do start, write, and finish stories and assignments
- Attention to Detail: You sweat the small stuff
- Startup: You actively want to join a startup; you abhor corporate bureaucracy
How to Apply
- Email jeff@arenamag.com with:
- Subject line of ‘Applying for Staff Writer’
- 1-2 sentences on why you’d be a good fit
- Link to or write what you believe would make for a good Arena piece that’s less than 500 words (you will be writing both long and short in this role). Can be something you’ve already wrote.
- Attach your resume as a PDF
- Add anything else you’d like us to know!
