Our client, a well-established law firm in Kampala, is seeking an experienced and ambitious Senior Associate to join and support the leadership of its Technology, Media, Telecoms, Intellectual Property & Sustainability (TMT/IP & Sustainability) Practice Group.
Location: Kampala, Uganda, with regional assignments
Reports to: Partner & Head, TMT/IP & Sustainability
Growth pathway: Partner (Local/Regional)

ABOUT THE ROLE
You will work on sophisticated and emerging legal and policy matters at the intersection of technology, intellectual property, digital transformation, sustainability, ESG, climate finance and carbon markets. You will take significant responsibility for client relationships, matter management, supervision of lawyers, business development and thought leadership.
KEY PRACTICE AREAS
Technology, Media & Telecoms: technology and telecoms regulation; fintech and digital financial services; data protection and privacy; cybersecurity; AI and emerging technologies; digital commerce and platforms; cloud, SaaS and outsourcing; software licensing and technology procurement.
Intellectual Property: trademarks, copyright and patents; IP registration, protection and enforcement; licensing and technology transfer; brand protection and portfolio management; software and digital IP; IP audits and strategy; IP in corporate and commercial transactions.
Sustainability, ESG & Carbon Markets: ESG advisory; carbon-market regulation and carbon-credit transactions; carbon project development and approvals; offtake and purchase agreements; Article 6 of the Paris Agreement (6.2 and 6.4); host-country authorisations and corresponding adjustments; carbon registries and standards; voluntary and compliance markets; climate finance; ESG reporting and disclosure.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead and manage complex TMT/IP, sustainability, ESG and carbon-market assignments
• Act as a key point of contact and trusted adviser to clients
• Draft and review legal opinions, agreements, policies, transaction documents and regulatory submissions
• Advise technology companies, telecoms operators, banks, fintechs, digital platforms, multinationals, carbon project developers, investors and financiers
• Supervise and review the work of Associates, junior lawyers, legal assistants and interns
• Manage timelines, budgets and client expectations, and conduct legal and regulatory due diligence
• Support regulatory applications, registrations and approvals, and lead client trainings and workshops
• Deputise for the Partner & Head of the Practice Group when required
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & PRACTICE MANAGEMENT
• Identify new business opportunities and lead pitches, proposals, EOIs and tenders
• Build relationships with clients, regulators, industry associations and development partners
• Publish articles, legal alerts and thought-leadership pieces, and speak at industry events
• Coordinate work allocation, mentor junior lawyers and support performance reviews
• Monitor time recording, billing, collections and matter profitability
• Contribute to Practice Group strategy, budgets and business plans
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from a recognised university
• Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre or equivalent
• Admission to practise law in Uganda
• A Master's degree or professional certification in technology law, IP, sustainability, ESG, climate change, environmental law or a related field is an added advantage
EXPERIENCE
• At least five (5) years of relevant post-qualification experience
• Demonstrable experience in TMT/IP, fintech, data protection, sustainability, ESG, climate finance, carbon markets or related regulatory work
• Strong experience drafting and negotiating technology, commercial and/or regulatory agreements
• Experience managing significant client matters with limited Partner supervision
• Experience supervising or mentoring junior lawyers
• Experience dealing with regulators, government institutions and other sophisticated stakeholders
Experience in Article 6, carbon-credit transactions, carbon project development, carbon registries, climate policy or ESG advisory will be a distinct advantage.
