Job summary
The Reach Stacker Driver plays a critical role in the efficient and secure management of containerized cargo within logistics facilities. This position involves operating heavy machinery to handle, lift, stack, and relocate containers, ensuring seamless integration with broader supply chain operations. The role demands a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and productivity to minimize downtime, improve turnaround time, influence throughput, prevent accidents, and support the timely delivery of goods in compliance with international standards.
Job descriptions & requirements
- Safely operate the reach stacker to load, unload, lift, stack, and transport containers (e.g., 20ft, 40ft, and specialized units) within the yard, warehouse, terminal, or project site, adhering to weight limits (up to 45 tons) and height restrictions.
- Implement safe handling practices during all operations, including securing loads, monitoring stability, and avoiding overloads to prevent tipping or damage; conduct risk assessments for each lift and ensure proper positioning to minimize hazards.
- Perform thorough daily inspections of the reach stacker, checking components such as hydraulic systems, brakes, tires, lights, horns, backup alarms, and safety guards.
- Immediately report any mechanical issues, wear and tear, or safety defects to the maintenance team or supervisor; assist in basic troubleshooting and participate in scheduled maintenance activities to extend equipment lifespan.
- Organize and stack containers in designated bays according to yard plans, optimizing space utilization while considering factors like container type, weight distribution, and accessibility for future retrieval; use GPS or yard management software for precise placement.
- Follow directives from the yard signalman or yard supervisor, collaborate with truck drivers and logistics officers, and ensure all activities comply with company HSE policies.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the reach stacker cab and exterior, including removing debris and ensuring proper lubrication; store equipment securely at the end of shifts to prevent unauthorized use or vandalism.
- Adhere to yard traffic rules, speed limits of 10-15 km/h, and signage, navigate congested areas safely, yielding to pedestrians and other vehicles.
- Education. Minimum of a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or equivalent high school qualification. Preference for candidates with vocational training in heavy machinery operation from recognized institutions.
- Certification. Valid Heavy Equipment Operator License issued by the Uganda Ministry of Works and Transport or an internationally recognized body. Certification specific to reach stackers or forklifts is mandatory. Additional certifications in First Aid, Fire Safety, or Hazardous Materials Handling are advantageous.
- Experience. At least 3-5 years of hands-on experience operating reach stackers or comparable heavy lifting equipment.
- Knowledge. Solid understanding of container handling protocols, yard optimization techniques, and basic mechanics.
- Technical Proficiency. Expert knowledge of reach stacker operations, including telescopic boom handling, spreader attachments, and load balancing; ability to maneuver in tight spaces with precision.
- Safety Awareness. In-depth understanding of workplace safety protocols, risk identification, and emergency response; commitment to zero-accident targets.
- Communication and Teamwork. Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills for coordinating with diverse teams; ability to work collaboratively in multicultural environments.
- Resilience and Adaptability. Capacity to perform under pressure, handle long shifts (including nights/weekends), and adapt to dynamic operational demands in fast-paced logistics settings.
- Physical Fitness. Good physical condition to handle the demands of the role, including climbing into the cab and working in outdoor environments.
