Job summary

The Lead Social Worker has a special role in helping to implement FCW’s Standard of Care for all the students and families in the sponsorship program by leading and coaching FCW’s team of Social Workers. Working under the supervision of the Sponsorship Director the Lead Social Worker is required to play a key role in the holistic care of the students in the sponsorship program.

Purpose
The Lead Social Worker has a special role in helping to implement FCW’s Standard of Care for all the students and families in the sponsorship program by leading and coaching FCW’s team of Social Workers. Working under the supervision of the Sponsorship Director the Lead Social Worker is required to play a key role in the holistic care of the students in the sponsorship program.


Overall Responsibilities
1. Plan and coordinate spiritual, academic, physical, social and economic programs.
2. Locate families and carry out home visitations and follow up of all the sponsored children assigned to you.
3. Act as the major link between the families and the Sponsorship Director.
4. Regularly report to the Sponsorship Director of the findings in the field as well as the medical, educational and home environment needs of the families.
5. Responsible for basic counseling of the families on all holistic care issues, including HIV counseling.
6. Evaluate the individual problems faced by the families and plan out a strategy to give help whenever possible.
7. Participate in planning and carrying out training and discipleship programs of the Organization whenever called upon.
8. Implement the Micro Finance Strategy alongside the FCW Accountant as a way of financially empowering the families of the sponsored children.
9. Identify and recommend professionals and service providers who can help the families that we work with when necessary.
10. Follow up on the medical needs of the families.
11. Help families adjust to changes and challenges in their lives such as illness, deaths, divorce, or unemployment.
12. Be familiar with Uganda’s Child Protection laws and respond to and/or report all known incidents that violate these laws or FCW policy.
13. Write and submit all required reports on time to the Sponsorship Director and Assistant Country Director. (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports).


Supervisory Responsibilities
1. Plan and facilitate regular training for the Social Workers.
2. Assist in the development and facilitation of programs for the Kipindi Mpito micro community.
3. Develop budgets and work plans for each individual Social Worker and for the sponsorship program overall and work to stay within those budgets and plans at all times.
4. Compile and submit necessary progress reports and Standard of Care requirements to the Sponsorship Director and Assistant Country Director on time.
5. Evaluate, coach and mentor all Social Workers, providing immediate performance feedback while in the field, as well as assist the Sponsorship Director to develop annual performance evaluations and improvement plans for each Social Worker.
6. Visit each school attended by FCW children at least once per school term and develop good working relationships with the schools’ administration teams
7. Visit and work alongside each Social Worker at least two days per school term as a way of supporting them in the field and providing assistance and performance feedback.
8. Along with the Social Worker, visit all FCW family homes deemed “high risk” at least once per school term.
9. Administer appropriate disciplinary action to Social Workers, with guidance from the Sponsorship Director, if FCW policies or Ugandan Laws are broken.

Hours of work
Work hours will vary according to the program schedule, needs, and holidays; however, the Lead Social Worker will be expected to work a minimum of 5 days per week. This will occasionally include weekends and holidays as necessary for the program.

Candidate specifications
  • A degree in Social Work and Social Administration
  • Minimum 5 years relevant work experience
  • Postgraduate qualification is a plus.
