Laboratory Technician

Position Overview

• The Laboratory Technician, working for Aspen Medical in support of the United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOS), s responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of specimens to support the healthcare needs of patients.
• This role emphasizes adherence to clinical governance, maintaining quality and safety standards, contributing to continuous quality improvement, and ensuring compliance with evidence-based contemporary laboratory guidelines to deliver accurate diagnostic services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure all laboratory testing and procedures are conducted in accordance with UNSOS protocols, international standards, and local regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate records of all laboratory tests, including specimen collection, processing, and reporting results, in compliance with organizational and legal standards.
• Participate in audits and quality control processes to monitor and improve laboratory performance.
• Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory processes, ensuring the safe handling of biological materials and chemicals.
• Contribute to risk management and patient safety protocols related to laboratory services.
• Perform laboratory tests with precision, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and timely delivery of results.
• Adhere to strict quality control measures for all laboratory equipment and processes to ensure patient safety and reliable diagnostic results.
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization, following infection control protocols to prevent cross-contamination and ensure a safe working environment.
• Ensure proper handling and storage of specimens, reagents, and chemicals, adhering to safety guidelines and regulations.
• Monitor laboratory equipment performance and conduct routine maintenance or coordinate repairs when necessary.
• Actively participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives within the laboratory, identifying areas for enhancing service delivery and test accuracy.
• Provide feedback on laboratory procedures and suggest improvements based on the results of quality audits and reviews.
• Collaborate with the healthcare team to improve laboratory workflow and reduce turnaround times for critical test results.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures aimed at improving service quality.
• Engage in regular training and development activities to enhance professional skills and ensure up-to-date knowledge of laboratory best practices.
• Ensure all laboratory testing and procedures are carried out in compliance with current, evidence-based guidelines and international best practices.
• Stay informed about the latest advancements in laboratory technology, diagnostic procedures, and laboratory medicine to enhance service quality and accuracy.
• Adhere to international standards for laboratory accreditation and compliance, ensuring that the laboratory operates at the highest level of performance.
• Ensure laboratory practices are aligned with evidence-based guidelines for patient care, supporting accurate diagnostics that lead to better clinical outcomes.
• Participate in the review and update of laboratory protocols to ensure compliance with contemporary guidelines and regulatory changes.
• Promote ethical behavior and alignment with Aspen Medical’s Social Purpose and B Corp principles.
• Perform any additional tasks and responsibilities as required by the role or organization.

Selection Criteria

Essential

• Training of not less than two academic years in medical laboratory technology leading to the award of an associate degree or diploma in Medical Laboratory Practice or an equivalent qualification, with a minimum of three years progressive post-qualification experience in medical/clinical laboratory.
• Currently registered and licensed to practice in own country or another UN member state.
• English proficiency- a minimum of Level B 2 is required.

Desired

• Experience in laboratory management or quality control processes.
• Knowledge of infectious disease diagnostics, microbiology, or hematology is a plus.
• Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Fluency in English, with additional language skills being an advantage.
• Ability to work in a culturally diverse team and maintain a high level of professionalism in a challenging environment.
• Shifts: Flexible working hours, with the expectation to work weekends, holidays, and night shifts when required 24/7.
• Location: The role is based in Somalia within the UNSOS mission area.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as standing for extended periods in high stress conditions and managing physically intensive situations.
