aBi’s Background: The Agricultural Business Initiative (aBi) was jointly founded by the Governments of Denmark & Uganda in 2010 as a social enterprise that channels development cooperation funding to agribusinesses & agricultural service providers. aBi aims at building a competitive, profitable & sustainable agriculture and agribusiness sector in support of equitable wealth creation in Uganda. The aBi consists of two companies limited by guarantee: aBi Finance Ltd & aBi Development Ltd (formerly aBi Trust).
aBi Development Ltd: Its focus is to increase agricultural production & value addition by extending matching grants & Business Development Services (BDS) to agribusinesses, farmer organisations & intermediaries to enhance planning & management, production & business infrastructure, as well as upstream & downstream market linkages of producers & agribusinesses.
aBi Finance Ltd: In 2021 aBi Finance transitioned from a company limited by guarantee to a company limited by shares in a bid to commercialize its operations and attract new investments. it provides funding to financial institutions & agribusinesses with a focus on SMEs & smallholder farmers through Lines of Credit, Clean Technology Fund, Agricultural Loan Guarantees & Financial Services Develop- ment.
aBi’s current Business Plan 2019/23 aims at improved profitability, income & employment of Ugandan farmers & agribusinesses to achieve the following results: increased smallholder farmers’ sustainable production, productivity & market integration; improved beneficiary agribusinesses overall business performance & sustainability; increased smallholder farmers & agribusiness access to serviceable financial services; & aBi’s efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability enhanced.

The Intervention Manager-Agri Business is responsible for leading the effective implementation of aBi’s projects within the sector. In addition, S/he is responsible for strategic networking and relationship- building and acts as aBi’s primary representative-both with key decision/policymakers and with implementing partners.
The intervention manager is an expert in project management and in the utilization of agricultural financing to leverage beneficial change. S/he supports the aBi team and partners in implementing best practices; ensuring that aBi continuously develops new and more effective approaches and has a positive impact on the sustainable growth of the agricultural sector in Uganda. The Intervention Manager is responsible for ensuring that the portfolio of the projects delivers against the goals and targets laid out in the business plan and results management framework.
