The role of the HoS covers many different areas including leadership, programme evaluation, student discipline, and assessment.
The HoS serves as the educational leader, responsible for managing the policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe international learning environment that meets the approved curricula and mission of the school. Achieving academic excellence requires that the school HoS work collaboratively to direct and nurture all members of the school staff hired and to communicate effectively with parents.
Key Responsibilities: Brief description of the duties or responsibilities for the job
Key responsibilities:
- Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for overall performance.
- Manage, evaluate and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the vision, mission, values goals and culture of the school including instructional programmes, extracurricular activities, school policies, building maintenance, programme evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures.
- Liaise with the Curriculum Coordinators for instructional programmes, ensuring sequential learning experiences, supporting transitions within the continuum of programmes for students and teaching staff.
- Establish procedures for evaluation, working on action plan throughout the year.
- Selection of instructional materials and equipment, approving recommendations from HoDs after careful review.
- Supervise in a fair and consistent manner effective discipline and attendance systems with high standards, consistent with the vision, mission, values and policies of the school.
- Ensure a safe and orderly environment and assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of students, staff and visitors.
- Research and collect data regarding the needs of students, staff and other pertinent information to ensure the school is operating efficiently
- Keep the staff motivated. Conduct meetings, as necessary, for the proper functioning of the school and bi-weekly meetings with all HoDs to determine areas of concern or improvement in each department
- Maintain a master schedule for all departments timetables, PDs, exam schedules and unit overviews. This includes developing the calendar for the school year in collaboration with the HODs
- Ensure schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas are in place and effective, including before and after school.
- Maintain visibility with students, teachers, parents and the Board. Communicate regularly with all relevant stakeholders eg. parents, staff and PTO, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the students in the school.
- Communicate with the CEO and Board regularly about the needs, successes and general operation of the school, this includes timely reporting of relevant school issues as required and on staff not meeting their contractual agreements
- Establish procedures for the safe storing and integrity of all public and confidential school records.
- Ensure that student and staff records are complete and current.
- Put policies and procedures in place to support inclusivity in the school and identify and address the special needs of students including health-related concerns
- Oversee all internal and external communications and marketing for the school
- Strategic planning, budgeting and allocation of funds per department for each school year
- Supervise all HODs including performance management, recruitment and supporting them to achieve their respective targets
Educational Requirements: Minimum education level required to perform this job
- A Bachelors Degree in Education
- A Masters Degree in Education or School Management is an added advantage
Related Job Experience: Number of years and nature of previous work experience required to successfully perform the job
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role in a school setting
- Experience with the IB curriculum
- Teaching experience in an international school
