Job descriptions & requirements
ABOUT THE ROLE
Africa Mountain Gold is commissioning a new gold-refining hub in Kampala - a 100 kg/day Turkish-supplied refining line designed to take East African doré through to 999.9 fine gold. We are hiring a Gold Melting Technician to join the operations team from day one: receive feed material, run the furnaces, manage flux chemistry, and produce certified bullion. This is a chance to commission a brand-new line from the ground up and to grow with the operation as we scale.
LOCATION
On-site at our Kampala refining facility (Plot 10, Upper Naguru Road, Kampala). Full-time, permanent.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Receive doré bars and gold-bearing feed; verify weights and chain of custody before processing.
- Operate induction and gas-fired smelting furnaces; manage crucible loading, flux chemistry (borax, soda ash, silica), and slag tapping.
- Run Miller chlorination and electrolytic refining cycles to produce 999.9 fine gold.
- Coordinate with the assayer on pre-melt sampling, XRF, and fire-assay verification.
- Cast finished product to specification: kilobars, granulation, bullion bars.
- Maintain rigorous input/output reconciliation and full chain-of-custody records.
- Routine maintenance of furnaces, crucibles, and ancillary equipment.
- Operate to LBMA Responsible Gold Guidance and OECD due diligence standards.
- Train and supervise junior operators as the team scales.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- Diploma or degree in Metallurgy, Materials, Chemical or Mining Engineering, or equivalent technical training.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in a precious-metals refining or smelting environment.
- Practical mastery of furnace operation, flux chemistry, and casting; familiarity with Miller and Wohlwill processes.
- Strong HSE discipline: molten-metal handling, fume extraction, chlorine controls.
- Meticulous record-keeping; comfortable with reconciliation and audit trails.
- Fluent in English; Luganda or other regional languages are an advantage.
- Right to work in Uganda, or willing to relocate (we sponsor work permits for the right candidate).
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience in commissioning a new refining line.
- Background working with Turkish-supplied refining equipment.
- Exposure to ASM (artisanal and small-scale mining) feedstock processing.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive package commensurate with experience, with annual review.
- Relocation support for non-Ugandan hires: flights, settling-in allowance, and accommodation.
- Career progression as the Uganda hub scales toward LBMA-pathway accreditation.
- Modern equipment: commission a brand-new 100 kg/day refining line from day one.
- Group exposure across the UAE, Uganda, Somaliland, and (soon) Madagascar.
- Work-permit sponsorship for qualified non-Ugandan candidates.
