Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world. In fact, over 75% of its citizens are under the age of 30. This demographic represents immense potential. However, the transition from school to work remains a major challenge because of a persistent skills gap.
To bridge this gap, BrighterMonday Uganda launched the Gen-Kazi Programme. We created this initiative through a strategic partnership with the Mastercard Foundation under the Young Africa Works strategy.
The programme equips young job seekers with technical capabilities, soft skills, and professional mentorship. Today, Gen-Kazi is actively changing youth employment in Uganda. Instead of just encouraging youth to search for jobs, we help them match with the right employers.
The Scale of Impact: 130,000 Trained, 30,000 Placed
Data shows the true power of a workforce development initiative. Excitingly, the Gen-Kazi Programme Uganda has surpassed all its targets in just one year and three months. The project is transforming the lives of thousands of young professionals at a rapid pace.
During this 15-month window, the initiative has successfully upskilled over 130,000 young Ugandans. We focus heavily on digital literacy, core soft skills, and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Consequently, we have already placed an estimated 30,000 youth directly into meaningful jobs. These placements span across formal employment sectors, internships, and the growing gig economy.
Furthermore, this impact reaches far beyond the capital city. The programme boasts strong national coverage. We have active operations in the Northern (Gulu), Western, West Nile (Arua/Muni), and Central regions.
By hitting these massive milestones in just over a year, the programme proves a vital point. Youth unemployment does not happen because of a lack of talent. Instead, it happens due to a lack of marketplace alignment. Gen-Kazi fixes this issue by connecting ambitious youth directly with corporate recruitment pools.
Driving a “Skills-First” Revolution
The modern corporate landscape in Uganda is changing fast. Academic credentials are still valuable, but they are no longer the only key to landing a job. Today, approximately 65% of Ugandan employers say that actual workplace readiness is more important than a specific university degree.
The Gen-Kazi Programme capitalizes on this shift by pioneering a skills-first approach. We deliver immersive training through nationwide career clinics, including our popular Career Cupid Clinics. We also host regional events at partner institutions like Kyambogo University, Gulu University, Muni University, and Ndejje University.
Our curriculum focuses on three vital pillars:
- The Digital and AI Pivot: Artificial intelligence is reshaping standard business operations. Because of this, Gen-Kazi trains youth on advanced, AI-driven career tools. We ensure digital literacy is a standard capability for everyone, not a luxury.
- Core “Power Skills”: Employers frequently say that fresh graduates lack communication and emotional intelligence. Therefore, our training puts critical thinking and problem-solving at the forefront.
- Workplace Preparedness: We guide candidates through interactive CV clinics and live mock interviews. As a result, youth learn exactly how to pitch their value to hiring managers.
Decentralizing Opportunity Beyond Kampala
Inclusivity is a core strength of the Gen-Kazi initiative. Regional youth face unique economic barriers, so BrighterMonday Uganda has decentralized its approach. We ensure that young people outside major urban hubs get equal access to opportunities.
For example, our career fair at Gulu University brought dozens of regional employers face-to-face with local talent. This event featured live interview sessions. Thanks to this setup, prepared candidates bypassed long digital application processes and secured job offers on the spot.
Additionally, we deployed localized training frameworks across the West Nile region, from Muni University to refugee-hosting communities in the Terego District. We also launched the Gen-Kazi Women’s Career & Empowerment Fair with the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Females’ Campus. This specific initiative supports young women and dismantles gender barriers in professional spaces.
A Win-Win for Employers and Job Seekers
For employers, the Gen-Kazi Programme serves as a vetted talent pipeline. It drastically reduces recruitment costs, hiring time, and onboarding friction. Instead of sorting through thousands of mismatched resumes, organizations get direct access to work-ready candidates.
For job seekers, the programme acts as a lifelong career partner. Youth gain access to BrighterMonday’s extensive digital platform and placement networks. This connection ensures their new skills translate directly into steady employment and financial independence.
The Road Ahead
The economic landscape of East Africa will continue to evolve. Therefore, the demand for adaptable, digitally literate professionals will only grow. By upskilling 130,000 youth and placing 30,000 in jobs in just 15 months, Gen-Kazi has built a scalable blueprint for sustainable growth.
By matching local ambition with real opportunity, BrighterMonday Uganda and the Mastercard Foundation are doing more than just filling job vacancies. Together, we are future-proofing Uganda’s workforce.
