Position Summary
The Registered Midwife is responsible for providing safe, high-quality maternal, newborn, and reproductive health services at the AsOne Ministries health facility in the Serere community, in line with Uganda Ministry of Health (MoH) standards and guidelines. The role combines strong
clinical and midwifery competence with compassionate, respectful, woman-centered care, ensuring positive pregnancy, birth, and newborn outcomes for mothers and their families. The registered midwife works closely with the Clinical Officer/In-Charge, fellow health workers, and the local community to promote safe motherhood, family planning, and child health within a Christ-centered model of care.
Key Responsibilities
Antenatal Care
- Conduct antenatal care (ANC) assessments and examinations for pregnant women, in line with the Uganda focused antenatal care (FANC) guidelines.
- Screen, monitor, and manage common and high-risk pregnancy conditions, referring complicated cases promptly to the Clinical Officer/In-Charge or higher-level facility.
- Provide health education on nutrition, birth preparedness, danger signs, and complication readiness during pregnancy.
- Administer routine ANC interventions, including tetanus immunization, iron/folic acid supplementation, deworming, and malaria prophylaxis (IPTp).
- Offer and conduct HIV counseling and testing, and initiate/monitor prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services for HIV-positive mothers.
- Maintain accurate antenatal records and mother-baby health cards for continuity of care.
Labour, Delivery & Postnatal Care
- Provide skilled attendance during labour and delivery, monitoring maternal and fetal wellbeing throughout using the partograph and other MoH-approved tools.
- Conduct normal vaginal deliveries safely, applying active management of the third stage of labour (AMTSL) to prevent postpartum hemorrhage.
- Recognize, manage, and refer to obstetric emergencies and complications (e.g., postpartum hemorrhage, obstructed labour, eclampsia) promptly and appropriately.
- Perform immediate newborn care, including resuscitation where necessary, cord care, and essential newborn care practices (drying, skin-to-skin contact, early initiation of breastfeeding).
- Provide postnatal care (PNC) for mothers and newborns, including monitoring for postpartum complications, wound/episiotomy care, and breastfeeding support.
- Educate mothers and families on postnatal danger signs, newborn care, hygiene, and birth spacing.
Family Planning & Reproductive Health
• Provide family planning counseling and services, including provision of short-term and long-term methods within scope of practice.
• Offer cervical cancer screening, sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening/treatment, and reproductive health education.
• Support adolescent and youth-friendly reproductive health services with confidentiality and sensitivity.
• Promote birth spacing and responsible reproductive health choices in line with national family planning guidelines.
Child Health & Immunization
- Conduct growth monitoring, nutrition assessment, and under-five clinic services for infants and young children.
- Administer routine childhood immunizations in line with the Uganda National Expanded Programme on Immunization (UNEPI) schedule.
- Screen for and manage common childhood illnesses, referring complicated cases appropriately, in line with Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines.
- Support exclusive breastfeeding promotion and infant/young child feeding counseling.
Emergency & Referral Care
• Identify and respond promptly to maternal, newborn, and gynecological emergencies, initiating first-line emergency management within scope of practice.
• Coordinate timely and safe referral and transfer of high-risk mothers, newborns, or complicated cases to higher-level health facilities.
• Communicate clearly with families and the receiving facility during referrals to ensure continuity of care.
• Maintain readiness of emergency delivery and newborn resuscitation equipment and supplies at all times.
Records, Reporting & Compliance
• Maintain accurate and complete maternal, newborn, and child health records, registers, and partographs in line with MoH Health Management Information System (HMIS) requirements.
• Compile and submit timely maternal and child health reports (ANC, deliveries, PNC, immunization) to the Clinical Officer/In-Charge and District Health Office channels.
• Participate in maternal death reviews, audits, and other quality-of-care improvement processes as required.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and data protection standards in all record-keeping and reporting.
Resource & Facility Management
• Maintain and stock the labour ward/maternity unit with essential drugs, delivery kits, and newborn care supplies.
• Ensure proper sterilization, infection prevention, and control (IPC) practices in the maternity/labour ward.
• Monitor and report on equipment functionality (e.g., delivery beds, resuscitation equipment, weighing scales) and coordinate maintenance or replacement.
• Contribute to budgeting and procurement planning for maternal and newborn health supplies.
Teamwork & Community Outreach
• Work collaboratively with the Clinical Officer/In-Charge and fellow health workers to ensure coordinated, quality maternal and child health services.
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and continuous professional development activities.
• Collaborate with Village Health Teams (VHTs) and community health structures to strengthen antenatal follow-up, birth notification, and postnatal home visits.
• Participate in community health education, outreach clinics, and safe motherhood awareness campaigns.
• Engage and educate mothers, families, and the local community on safe motherhood practices, reflecting Christian values of compassion and dignity for every mother and child.
Other Duties
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Clinical Officer/In-Charge or AsOne Ministries leadership as needs arise.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery, or Registered Comprehensive Nursing and Midwifery, from a recognized institution.
• Valid registration and practicing license with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC), in good standing.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ clinical experience in maternal and newborn health, preferably in a labour ward or maternity unit setting.
• Sound knowledge of Uganda Ministry of Health safe motherhood protocols, FANC, IMCI, and PMTCT guidelines.
• Valid certification in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC), Basic Life Support/CPR, and infection prevention and control (IPC).
• A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered service.

- Skilled in family planning counseling and service provision.
- Knowledge of immunization schedules and child health/nutrition monitoring.
- Competent in health records management and HMIS reporting.
- Capable of maintaining a clean, safe, well-organized, and fully functional maternity/labour ward.
