About the Opportunity:
The Agrifood System Transformation for Youth Employment (ASTYE) program in Uganda is a transformative initiative designed to address systemic challenges hindering agricultural development and youth employment, particularly for young women. Funded by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented in partnership with DSG, AGRA, and GOAL, ASTYE aims to create dignified and fulfilling work opportunities for young people while strengthening Uganda's agrifood ecosystem.
DSG is seeking a highly experienced Project Lead – Soil Mapping and Data Management to support the Program Manager of Data and Information by translating strategic direction into execution and coordinating technical actors. The Project Lead is expected to ensure that all project activities are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards across all selected ASTYE Uganda implementation geographies.
In This Role, You Will Make An Impact By:
Project Delivery and Coordination
• Lead day-to-day implementation of ASTYE’s soil mapping and data management project in line with approved workplans and budgets.
• Support the establishment, onboarding, and
Coordination of the soil mapping task force.
• Support the delivery of soil maps at a minimum resolution of 1:50,000 and filling of critical soil data gaps.
• Support the identification of high gap districts requiring deeper mapping.
• Coordinate aggregation and dissemination of soil mapping outputs through the Uganda Soils Information System.
Technical Oversight and Quality Assurance
• Deliver technical training for taskforce members and soil laboratory technicians.
• Oversee soil data management training and structured capture of datasets.
• Support application of soil data standards and data sharing policies.
• Coordinate with IT service providers to integrate soil data into the Uganda Soils Information System.
Laboratory and Service Provider Engagement
• Coordinate engagement with soil testing laboratories.
• Support laboratory upgrading and service readiness activities.
• Act as operational liaison between laboratories, consultants, and ASTYE Uganda teams.
Youth-Led Soil Testing Services
• Support the mobilization and organization of youth soil testing groups.
• Oversee technical onboarding into Uganda Soils Information System compatible workflows.
• Deliver training and technical backstopping to youth groups.
• Support refinement of soil testing business models.
Coordination and Reporting
• Coordinate closely with the Program Manager of Data and Information.
• Support cross-component integration with extension and advisory services.
• Prepare technical updates and inputs to program reports.
• Contribute to learning and reflection processes.
To Succeed In This Role, You Bring:
Education & Professional Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
• At least 8 years of relevant professional experience.
• Experience coordinating technical taskforces and field-based programs.
• Experience working with GIS-based soil mapping outputs is an advantage.
Leadership & Technical Competencies
• Strong understanding of soil sampling, laboratory testing, and soil data workflows.
• Familiarity with soil mapping activities recently undertaken in Uganda.
• Strong coordination and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with GIS, database systems, or data visualization tools is an advantage.
