Davis College is searching for an energetic & motivated candidate for the position of Dean of BME. The Dean BME will be a founding team member of Davis College’s competency-based program that will be offered in a face-to-face, blended and online learning environment. The Dean’s primary focus will be to develop strategy, create innovative curriculum, conduct ongoing evaluations of program performance, serve as a manager to faculty, and conduct in-person class observations to ensure all interactions are engaging and in accord with the highest standards of learning design and instructional methodologies.
This position is ideal for a determined and enthusiastic educator who is passionate about personalized learning and eager to continually improve our competency-based academic model. The individual will have an eye for curriculum development processes and be an expert in academic pedagogy and evaluation, as well as Davis College policy and procedures to ensure standards are being met. The Dean will work with and manage a team that includes Facilitators, Program Mentors, Academic Advisors, and Assessment Specialists and will ultimately be responsible for the success of the program.
The Dean will develop and facilitate professional development opportunities for their team, as well as receive their own professional development opportunities.
The Dean is required to perform all assigned duties to the best of their abilities, specifically including but not limited to the following:
What you’ll do
Provide strategic vision and execute on the vision, strategy, Key Performance Indicators, and goals determined by the Chief Academic Officer (CAO).
Oversee, manage and direct all program faculty including mentorship on pedagogy and development of learning modalities.
Evaluate efficacy of course material to Davis College learners as per the Academic Standards.
Conduct ongoing evaluations of faculty and student performance (e.g., student outcomes, accreditation requirements, market demand).
Develop curriculum and content efforts in collaboration with other key academic team members.
Design, revise and migrate courses in a learning management system working in conjunction with the academic team.
Research and provide content that is regionally relevant to topic matter and academic relevance and stay abreast of trends in the industry and use this to maintain curriculum relevance and increase staff knowledge for high quality student support. Work with the academic leadership to ensure the infusion of regional content.
Maintain open communication through regularly scheduled meetings and shared folders concerning the Competency Based Education and Learning Modalities courses and content design including industry and regional relevance.
Collaborate with the DOS to identify and report student behavior and discipline by establishing and enforcing Davis College policies as per the Student Handbook policies.
Provide ongoing feedback on the effectiveness of the curriculum to the VP of Academics and Student Life (VP ASL).
Provide input and recommendations on how to successfully adapt the curriculum for cultural and situational relevance.
Mentor, coach, and provide capacity building support to the BME team.
Facilitate and participate in regular scheduled faculty formal and informal observations. In collaboration with the professional development team, develop and facilitate required professional development workshops, courses, and training for the BME team.
Ensure that students provide course evaluations at the end of each trimester by scheduling with classes to complete this requirement.
Collaborate with the BME team members on current academic initiatives and special projects including events, VIP visits and distinguished visiting professors.
Build a network of professional guest speakers that will supplement the curriculum.
Seek opportunities to talk publicly about the program and academic model within the community, conferences, and meetings.
Develop, maintain, and report on the program’s fiscal budget.
Ensure that faculty, students, and staff in the program have the resources needed to carry out their academic and administrative duties.
Work in conjunction with the academic leadership to ensure that all trimester content is prepared and available in advance of each upcoming trimester including books, materials, or any other resources to facilitate the curriculum.
Assist in the development, management and implementation of additional BME programs including supporting the Academic and Campus Leadership with the accreditation processes and ensure that all necessary documentation is prepared for the accreditation processes (provisional and permanent), to include ongoing reviews and inspections.
Oversee and advise on the overall operations of Davis College Incubation Center (DCIC).
Address recurring disciplinary issues of students including excessive lateness, performance that does not meet expectations and any behavior that does not meet the Davis College Code of Conduct.
Be the first point of contact for issues including complaints and challenges faced by faculty and be the voice of faculty during academic leadership meetings.
Prepare a wide variety of often complex materials (e.g.. plans, reports, analyses, recommendations, procedures, etc.) as appropriate to document activities and issues, meet compliance requirements, provide audit references, make presentations, and/or provide supporting materials for requested actions.
Participate as needed in weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings and program meetings.
Submit weekly reports to the AD and consistently communicate/collaborate with academic leadership and colleagues.
Adhere to and observe all policies as detailed in the Davis College Employee Handbook and Faculty Handbook.
Assist the Director of Human Resources and relevant Managers in the hiring of new BME staff.
Accept additional assignments and projects, as needed. Meet deadlines and provide deliverables as per the CAO and VP ASL’s instructions.
Embrace ambiguity and quickly adapt to changing duties and roles, particularly during the MVP pilot; the head of the department should welcome new responsibilities and roles as they emerge.
Other responsibilities as determined by the CAO and VP ASL to support the success of the academic model and students.
These tasks and responsibilities constitute the employee’s key performance requirements, which will be evaluated as required by the Davis College Employee Handbook.
What you’ll need
Required Education & Experience:
Master’s degree or above required with a minimum of five years of work experience, preferably in an academic setting.
High level of general knowledge in Math, Business Management, English, IT, and Leadership.
Must have strong and accurate skills working with numbers to assess student data.
Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to quickly develop rapport with colleagues, faculty, and administrators.
Advanced level of English in all four skill areas - Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. Must thrive when communicating in an English-only environment.
Preferred, but not mandatory, strong grasp of the Kinyarwanda, in all four skill areas - Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.
Proficiency with Google Drive and its associated applications, Microsoft Office applications, and Canvas LMS.
Experience working with EFL students.
