Yalelo Uganda was founded in 2019 and has quickly grown to be among the largest vertically integrated producers of freshwater fish in sub-Saharan Africa. Its scaling journey of the last 2 years is one of the fastest in the history of global aquaculture. We are setting the scene to significantly strengthen food security by sustainably producing a reliable supply of affordable, lean, and healthy protein for East Africa.

 

Yalelo Uganda is a subsidiary of the First Wave Group; the pioneer of sustainable Aquaculture in Africa. We bring together local resources and world-leading practices to implement a scalable solution easing the pressure on the struggling wild capture fisheries sector.

We are looking for a Data and Analytics Manager to cultivate the data-driven culture in the entire organization using analytics, data storytelling, visualization, and modeling techniques and technologies.

 

The Data and Analytics Manager will head an innovative and cross-departmental team working to maximize data leverage in Yalelo Uganda with the aim of driving growth and continuous improvement of all operational processes. This is the diverse role – tackling challenges such as optimizing international cold chain logistics, building new commercial channels for Fast Moving Consumer Goods, executing a digital transformation strategy, fine-tuning production, and defining executive reporting.

The Right – Fit candidate:

  •  At least 6+ years’ experience within Data Science, Business Analytics with at least 2+ years’ experience supervising data analysts, data scientists, BI managers and collaborating with data engineers.
  • A strong sense of work ownership and understands how to foster and manage accountability in colleagues.
  • No task too small’ mentality -- while you’ll be managing a team, you need to be willing to roll up your sleeves and execute when necessary.
  • Must enjoy teaching others about data integrity and be the champion of a single source of truth.
  • Self-initiating and motivating; able to manage multiple projects and people in a complex, fast changing environment.
  • Skilled in identifying and driving improvements in data capture processes as well as operations.
  • Eager to research, learn, and apply new data methods to Yalelo’s aquaculture value chain.
  • Able to approach problems with a process orientation.
  • A champion of service-support provision, with a determined approach to service excellence and continuous improvement.


D&A Analyst Functional Competencies are

  • Bachelors or master’s degree in Data Science, Economics, Software/process Engineering, Mathematics, Statistic or related field.
  • Extensive leadership experience and strong coaching abilities.
  • Knowledge of technological trends to build strategy (Eg. Awareness of Data Warehouse and Data Marts / Cubes, Visualisation).
  • Equally comfortable working with operators and executives.
  • Excellent presentation skills that provide deep analysis and insights in a succinct, easy to absorb way and encompasses clear, compelling communications.
  • Structured mindset, self-motivated, and willing to expand knowledge.
  • Strong ability to multitask and prioritize, plan and execute.
  • Scale up business experience in East Africa preferred
  • Experience rolling out new technologies in fast-moving organizations.
  • In-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing (OLAP) and ETL (Extract, transform, load) framework
  • Experienced with Power BI, Microsoft D365 (or an equivalent ERP system) and the Azure environment.


Key Duties

  • Own, lead and shape all business analytics across Yalelo Uganda while working with other data and analytics teams across parent organization.
  • (Over) communicate on KPI and company performance and create a culture of accountability
  • Be proactive in turning analytics into strategy - Help departments use data profitably and to enhance business decision making capabilities
  • Identify key user and business metrics yet to be discovered within the organization but that could have a significant upside impact.
  • Direct and oversee high-level strategic and tactical decisions for business intelligence tools and applications.
  • Represent Yalelo Uganda as lead data expert.


Reporting

  • Reports to Yalelo Uganda’s Finance Director with a functional reporting line to the First Wave’s Head of Data and Analytics
  • Managing a team of 4 - 2x Data Analysts, 2 x Data Clerks (with the expectation of continued team expansion in line with continued company scale-up
