English/Literature Teacher
Job summary
The English/Literature Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective instruction in English Language and Literature in English to secondary school students in the Serere community, in line with the national curriculum. The role combines strong subject mastery with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with reading, writing, comprehension, oral communication, and critical/literary analysis skills needed for academic advancement and future careers. The English/Literature Teacher works closely with the Director of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic excellence and nurture students’ confidence in communication and the humanities within a Christ-centered learning environment. Job descriptions & requirements
Curriculum Delivery & Instruction
• Plan, prepare, and deliver English Language and Literature in English lessons in line with the
national secondary curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus
requirements.
• Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes
(O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable).
• Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong grammar, composition, comprehension, oral
communication, and literary analysis skills.
• Use varied teaching methods, including guided reading, creative writing, debates, drama, and
discussion-based analysis of set texts and poetry, to accommodate different learning styles
and ability levels.
• Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, essays, and examinations, providing timely
and constructive feedback.
• Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support
where needed.
• Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments, ensuring
full syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.
• Guide students in the study of prescribed literature set texts (novels, plays, poetry, short
stories), oral literature, and functional/creative writing skills.
• Integrate values education, critical thinking, and communication skills relevant to everyday
life, in line with Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) guidelines.
Language & Literary Skills Development
• Organize and supervise reading programs, spelling/vocabulary drills, and public speaking or
debate sessions to strengthen learners’ language proficiency.
• Guide students in the correct use of grammar, punctuation, comprehension techniques, and
essay/composition writing structures.
• Facilitate literary appreciation through class readings, drama performances, poetry recitals,
and creative writing clubs.
• Coordinate with school administration on procurement of set texts, readers, dictionaries, and
other language/literature resource materials.
• Organize debates, drama festivals, storytelling competitions, or literary exhibitions that
reinforce classroom learning with real-world application.
Student Guidance & Mentorship
• Mentor students interested in language, communication, media, law, and literature-related
career paths, including further studies.
• Encourage participation in debate clubs, drama clubs, journalism/writing clubs, competitions,
quizzes, and academic exhibitions.
• Provide guidance and support to students struggling with English Language or Literature
concepts, including extra tuition where needed.
• Model discipline, articulate communication, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence
in language and literary skills, and reflects Christian values.
Resource & Records Management
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment
in line with school policy.
• Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for textbooks, set texts, readers,
dictionaries, and teaching aids.
• Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control of textbooks, set texts, and instructional
materials, including library/reading corner resources where applicable.
• Maintain an organized bank of past papers, model essays, and revision aids to support
examination preparation.
Teamwork & Collaboration
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align
academic planning.
• Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
• Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities such as debate, drama, and
public speaking programs.
• Engage parents and the local community in supporting students’ reading culture and
language development where appropriate.
Other Duties
• Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership as needs arise.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications & Experience
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with English Language and Literature
in English as teaching subjects, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ teaching experience at secondary school level, preferably
teaching English Language and/or Literature.
• Sound knowledge of the national secondary English Language and Literature curriculum,
UNEB syllabus, and Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
• Strong command of grammar, composition, comprehension, and literary analysis/criticism
techniques.
• Registered/licensed with the relevant Ugandan teaching body where applicable (e.g., valid
Teaching Practice Certificate/registration with the Ministry of Education and Sports).
• A demonstrated personal Christian faith and commitment to Christ-centered education.
Behavioral Competencies
• Passionate about teaching and mentoring young people in language, reading, and
communication skills.
• Patient, clear, and skilled at breaking down complex grammatical or literary concepts for
learners at different levels.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, balancing lesson planning, marking of
essays/compositions, and co-curricular activities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and parents.
• High level of integrity, responsibility, and accountability for school resources.
• Collaborative team player who contributes positively to the wider school community.
Technical Competencies
• Strong command of English Language and Literature in English subject content across the
secondary curriculum.
• Skilled in essay/composition marking, literary criticism, and facilitation of debate, drama, or
oral presentation activities.
• Competent in lesson planning, assessment design, and academic record-keeping.
• Basic proficiency in using technology and instructional aids for lesson preparation and
delivery.
• Capable of fostering a reading culture and encouraging creative expression among learners.
