HerStart: Innovate the Future
HerStart: Innovate the Future is an initiative developed by Youth Challenge International to foster and create innovative solutions for a more equitable and prosperous economy within Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda.
The program includes training and support for aspiring entrepreneurs in social enterprise, gender responsive business planning, the measurement of social impact, and access to finance. Canadian volunteers will be engaged in providing human capital support for activities through on-site placements and capacity building initiatives with partner organizations. Additionally, an entrepreneurial ecosystem will be catalyzed to identify and reduce gendered barriers, which will foster more enabling environments for young female entrepreneurs. This funding mechanism will also provide programmatic support for organizations to more effectively deliver gender-responsive activities that drive sustainable
YCI is expanding its project operations to Uganda and we are looking for a consultant to support this transition, including all operational and project start-up components.
We are seeking a passionate, skilled, creative, entrepreneurial, and dynamic leader to deliver exceptional results; a trailblazer who believes in youth as powerful agents of change and who is passionate about contributing to women’s empowerment and advancing both national and global gender equality agendas.
Responsibilities and outputs will include:
- Establishment of YCI Uganda: The Consultant will lead YCI’s successful market entry in Uganda, leveraging their robust knowledge of the country’s operational context to realize key operational requirements, including all legal regulations and NGO registration; in partnership with YCI’s global team, the Consultant will help recruit, train and onboard a talented in-country team, advise and acquire an office space and establish baseline operational processes that build off of YCI’s existing policies and procedures.
- Tactical Project Set-up: Providing hands-on direction and start-up leadership to a team of staff, Canadian volunteers, and local technical partners, the Consultant will ensure the successful launch of YCI’s first strategic initiative in Uganda. The Consultant will lead the development and support delivery of a country-level strategy and implementation plan and subsequent staff and partner budgets and work plans.
- Partnership Support and Development: The Consultant will lead the establishment and maintenance of strong relationships with identified project partners and additional key stakeholders within government, the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the community that will support project impact. Leveraging their networks and market knowledge, the Consultant will support YCI in successfully positioning itself in the local context.
Skills and Experience:
You have 8+ years of experience in business operations, management consulting, and/or entrepreneurship ecosystems, ideally leading CSOs/NGOs; you are an entrepreneurial leader with evidence of a strong commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment; you have significant experience working and living in Uganda with a strong understanding of the cultural and operational landscape; you are passionate about investing in women and youth livelihoods; you have business acumen, including sound financial planning, budget management and strategy design abilities; you have managed technical assistance programs funded by international donors; you thrive in a rapidly evolving operational context and have been an instrumental part of the startup of dynamic projects or organizations; you are able to plan and prioritize strategic goals and meet deadlines in complex contexts; you are a strong communicator and negotiator with excellent cross-cultural interpersonal skills.
