Job Description/Requirements
To enhance post-harvest handling practices in the bean, maize, and rice value chains in Eastern Uganda, specifically in the Sebei, Bugisu, and Busoga regions.
This initiative aims to equip farmers with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve their post-harvest management, thereby boosting the quantity and quality of produce, reducing losses, and contributing to an increase in the volume traded.
Responsibilities
Conduct on-ward Farmer Training Sessions:
• Facilitate training sessions for target farmers, including youths and women, on post-harvest handling (PHH) and quality management.
• Demonstrate PHH technologies and practices, such as the use of tarpaulins, hermetic bags, and deflectable storage bags.
• Use and distribute customized training materials (manuals, posters) during training sessions.
• Provide translation services where necessary to ensure comprehension among local participants.
Monitor and Evaluate Farmer Engagement:
• Provide feedback to the program management on the progress and challenges faced by trainees.
• Continuously update the farmer training database & submit the same on monthly basis to respective Field Supervisor
• Maintain accurate records of project activities including farmer aggregated volumes, farmers training attendance forms, farmer volumes sold etc.
• Support in Organizing Training Logistics:
• Collaborate in the logistical planning of training sessions, including venue setup, participant coordination, and ensuring the availability of necessary materials.
Requirements
• Holder of a Diploma in Agriculture with at least one year of practical experience in agricultural extension.
• Additional experience or training in post-harvest handling, or a related area is an added advantage.
• Previous experience working with farmer groups, cooperatives, or in rural development projects.
• Strong knowledge on modern agronomy & postharvest handling practices of bean, maize, and rice value chains
• Proficiency in local languages relevant to the training regions is a must.
• Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
• Ability to work effectively in diverse and rural settings
