Job Description/Requirements

The Senior Accountant will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with IFRS for SMEs, and effective management of accounting operations. The role supports the Finance Manager in maintaining sound financial systems, preparing reliable financial statements, managing audits, and contributing to strategic financial planning for forestry and environmental programs.


Financial Reporting and Reconciliation 

Maintain accurate general ledger records for all entities under the Kijani Group.

Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS for SMEs.

Ensure proper treatment of forestry-related transactions such as carbon credits, tree planting costs, and deferred revenue.

Perform reconciliations of bank accounts, intercompany balances, and control accounts.

Review journal entries and ensure all postings comply with company policies.

Cash Flow & Treasury Management

Prepare and update cash flow forecasts to support management decision-making.

Monitor cash balances and advise management on liquidity needs.

Track and reconcile loan repayments, interest expenses, and EFT/bank transfer clearings.

Oversee the correct classification of cash and non-cash transactions (e.g., unrealized FX, depreciation). 

Budgeting & Management Reporting

Support the Finance Director in preparing annual budgets and periodic forecasts.

Conduct budget vs. actual variance analysis and provide explanations for major deviations.

Prepare management reports and financial dashboards (Excel or Xero-based) to monitor performance by area, species, or site. 

Compliance & Audit

Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including but not limited to tax filings (PAYE, NSSF, VAT, and income tax).

Coordinate with external auditors and tax consultants during audits and reviews.

Maintain complete documentation and schedules to support audit processes.

Implement recommendations from audit reports.

System & Process Improvement

Manage accounting operations in Xero Accounting Software (setup, account maintenance, reconciliations, reporting).

Improve internal controls, accounting procedures, and document management systems.

Support automation of key financial reports and templates.

Ensure accounting policies and procedures are updated and applied consistently.

Team Support & Capacity Building 

Supervise junior accountants and provide technical support on complex transactions.

Review accounting entries for accuracy and compliance.

Provide coaching on the best financial practices and system use.


QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.

Professional certification or progress towards ACCA, CPA, or equivalent.

Minimum 3 years’ experience in accounting and auditing.

Experience with IFRS for SMEs implementation and financial statement preparation.

Proficiency in Xero Accounting Software and advanced Microsoft Excel (dashboards, formulas, analysis tools).


CORE COMPETENCIES  

Strong understanding of double-entry accounting and financial controls.

High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including use of complex formulas, pivot tables, financial modeling, and dashboard reporting.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Attention to detail and high integrity in handling financial data.

Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Quality of support provided to junior staff and other departments.
