OUR CLIENT

Our client, a provider of safe and sustainable water transportation solutions in Africa is offering revolutionary passenger marine for transport in Lake Victoria covering the three East African states of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The Client is seeking to fill the position of Operations Manager with a suitably qualified candidate with extensive experience in passenger transport to be based in Kisumu Kenya.


THE JOB

Reporting to the Country Manager, the Operations Manager has the primary responsibility of Providing safe and efficient marine passenger transport services in a cost-effective and profitable manner in full compliance with the law and international Marine Safety Management Standards.


Main Tasks and Responsibilities;

  • Ensure full compliance with company policies and procedures throughout all business activities. 
  • Ensure effectiveness and efficiency in all operations.
  • Ensure that the Uganda division adheres to all country laws, regulations and guidelines. 
  • Building the Waterbus brand in Uganda and creating awareness through promotional plans and advertising to position Waterbus as the preferred transport provider. 
  • Ensure that all vessels are operated safely in accordance with Company standards, policies, and customer requirements.
  • Provide surety that crews are competent and vessels are operated safely without accidents or incidents and meet scheduled sailing and arrival times
  • Inspect all vessels within scheduled targets and ensures that valid navigational licenses and maintenance are at all times 
  • Ensure that all marine assets are operated within budgeted targets.
  • Provide accurate and objective customer information that drives/stimulates improvement in performance.
  • Participate in detailed route development leading to MOUs with Government Agencies and Local stakeholders. Participate in any vessel route development plan. 
  • Ensuring the proper manning of passenger's vessels with qualified personnel and crew. Ensure employment contracts are in place and terms and conditions are implemented.
  • Ensure vessels are fully registered, insured, and operated in compliance with all applicable laws and Regulations.
  • Ensure the vessels are operated in a seaworthy condition and that any deficiency or loss of any critical equipment is immediately reported and rectified. 
  • Ensure vessels do have electronic chart systems in place and are reachable by phone and email.
  • Ensure that the Manual of Permitted Operations is adhered to and no passenger's vessel is allowed to be operated in any dangerous situation which could have been avoided.  
  • Co-operating with the CTO in achieving optimum vessel performance consistent with the vessel's commercial obligations. 
  • Monitoring implementation of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS). 
  • Provide annual performance reports of each crew member and identify training needs. Prepare an annual training plan.
  • Monitor vessel fuel consumption and conduct ad-hoc inspections. Ensure fuel bills are received and invoices are paid electronically.
  • Establishing good relations with Local Authorities, Maritime Authorities, suppliers, Insurance companies, agents, beach masters, and local communities.
  • Ensure emergency response plans are in place and drills are done as planned.
  • Monitoring, motivating, and encouraging all Company personnel that is related to SMS for their active participation in the implementation of GLOBOLOGY's Safety and Environmental policy and other issues outlined in the SMS Manual. 
  • Performing management reviews of the Safety Management System at appropriate time intervals. 


Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering related fields.
  • 3 - 5 years of previous relevant experience in a similar role within the Transport Sector as head of operations in a well-established road, rail, marine, or air transport company.
  • Reasonable Knowledge of marine operations
  • Sound business management skills
  • Knowledge of the local and regional maritime transport sector.
