Brief Overview
Under the direct supervision of the Health Operations Manager and Director of Health, the Medical van Driver will provide transportation to Métis Citizens in the province of Saskatchewan to access medical services such as appointments with physicians, hospital care, publicly funded diagnostic tests and preventive screening programs. These appointments are coordinated through the Medical Travel Assistance Program run by the Métis Nation – Saskatchewan Department of Health. The Medical Van Driver will be assisting citizens to access medically required health services that they do not otherwise have the means to travel to on their own. This position will require a valid driver’s license which will be checked regularly. This position will also require significant regular travel to many different communities in the province.
Key Responsibilities
- Be willing to travel and accommodate requested pick ups and drop offs
- Be respectful and courteous to citizens utilizing the transportation services.
- Ensure respectful relationships with other staff, clients, client supports and public.
- Be knowledgeable and supportive of applicable policies.
- Always practice safe work habits.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of citizens during transport by maintaining the Medical Transportation Van in safe and sanitary conditions and always adhering to traffic laws.
- Knowledge of methods for safely assisting in the movement of clients with mobility issues, which may include persons using wheelchairs or walking aids and/or willingness to be trained.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for safely transporting people by passenger vehicle in adherence with the Saskatchewan Traffic Safety Act and/or willingness to be trained.
- Ensure confidentiality is always maintained.
- Report maintenance issues to Health Operations Manager to ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner.
- Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly logs, records and reports as required by SGI (Saskatchewan Government Insurance) and the MN-S Health Department.
Sanitation Cleanliness Requirements Include
- Sweep the floor and empty garbage containers daily.
- Dust and wipe down interior area of the bus as required.
- Wash the exterior and interior of the bus as required and as weather and road conditions permit.
- Ensure that all lights and windows are cleaned/brushed prior to the start of every run.
General Van Care
- During colder months, ensure the bus is plugged in for sufficient time to promote easy starting and longer engine life. (The use of timers is prohibited.)
- Check and maintain all fluid levels.
- Maintain daily maintenance logs and submit to Health Operations Manager on a weekly basis
- Report all accidents to the Health Operations Manager and, if necessary, to S.G.I. and local authorities.
- Advise Health Operations Manager of any required services for van.
- Store van at required locations for previously arranged service appointments.
- Other duties as required.

- Ability to always maintain strict confidentiality.

- Ability to display a positive work attitude.
- Ability to do Medium Work (exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects or assist clients)
Qualifications
- Hold and maintain a valid Class 4 driver’s license.
- Must be 18 years or older; cannot be a novice driver.
- Must be medically fit as per the requirements in the Saskatchewan Driver's Handbook
- Hold and maintain a clean driver’s abstract.
- Related training such as courses in First Aid, defensive driving or heavy equipment operation would be a definite asset.
- Experience in working with seniors and disabled persons would also be an asset.
- Individuals applying for a Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 driver's license, or a Class 5 license with a 1, 2, 3, 4, Heavy Trailer or School Bus Endorsement, are required to meet medical standards and file a medical report with SGI before testing begins (Please see more information at https://sgi.sk.ca/pro-driver/-/knowledge_base/pro-drivers/class-1-4-medical-standards ).
- Vision test; Included as part of your knowledge exam appointment
- Knowledge test; Class 4 knowledge tests include: Class 4, Basic and Sign.
- Trip Inspection; must demonstrate a trip inspection on a Class 4 vehicle
- Road Test; must take a road test in a Class 4 or 5 vehicle
Additional Requirements
- Must undergo a Criminal Record Check
- Be able to pass a medical examination as per the Highway Traffic Act.
- Must be willing to travel overnight and work occasional overtime hours.
- Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access reliable transportation
