East Africa Ministries|4africa has been working in South Sudan and Uganda since 2008 to-date. The East Africa Ministries is a not-for profit faith-based organization with a head office in Fort Worth, Dallas, USA.
In 2014, East Africa Ministries|4africa established the Leadership Academy of South Sudan, a mixed boarding secondary school, temporarily registered as an international school with the Ministry of Education & General Instructions, Juba, South Sudan.
The school seeks to recruit a suitably qualified South Sudanese or Ugandan citizen to fill the vacant position in the Science Department of Laboratory Technician.
JOB POSITION: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (1 Position)
REPORTS TO: HEAD OF DEPARTMENT, SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
PROJECT LOCATION: NIMULE, EASTERN EQUATORIAL STATE - SOUTH SUDAN

JOB SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for providing direct technical support to the teaching and learning of science-based subjects by ensuring laboratory equipment and related functionality, custody, and safety; that the laboratory is kept in order and ready for use at all times; that all resources are available and prepared for particular lessons; that the laboratory and science-based teaching activities including demonstrations following existing school policies, procedure, systems, and best practices applied. The Laboratory Technician’s role aligns with the organization’s vision, mission, and core values and will demand that periodic risk assessments are done and issues resolved promptly.
The Laboratory Technician will be accountable for the following:
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Assist the science teacher(s) by setting up the laboratory equipment, apparatus, chemicals and reagents for experiments/demonstration for senior 5 and 6 classes.
2. Oversea the inventory of laboratory equipment, apparatus and chemical supplies including ordering and handling the required chemicals and other supplies, and maintain the inventory spreadsheet for budget purposes.
3. Monitor student and staff safety in the laboratory, and be prepared to address safety emergencies including the cleanup of hazardous spills of chemicals/acids, and administer first aid related to chemical accidents as required.
4. Prepare buffer solutions of a given pH and calibrate the pH meter and prepare chemical indicator and biological stain solutions using appropriate quantities of reagents.
5. Prepare, maintain and ensure safe storage of apparatus both for demonstration and practical work and provide the resources required for lessons including photocopying, collation, typing, filing, etc.
6. Recommend, advise and test new laboratory apparatus and equipment when procured to ascertain their functionality before lessons and/or experiments are held so as to ensure a successful learning experience.
7. General maintenance of laboratory or room, including the care and maintenance of services, stores, laboratory workshop equipment, drainage systems, working surfaces etc., reporting any repairs required to the appropriate person(s) for action.
8. Maintain an acceptable standard of cleanliness and tidiness throughout the laboratories and prep rooms e.g. work benches, whiteboards, glassware, sinks etc.
9. Maintain stock to meet requirements, requisition to the approved standards, manage receipt and storage of new materials
10. Keep stock, breakage, and other such records as are required and inform the Deputy Headmaster when stocks are running low.
11. Reduce risk to laboratory users, and provide for first aid treatment in the laboratory in accordance with the school procedures.
12. Take care of insects, organisms and plants kept by the school for observations and experiments.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
1. Minimum of a Diploma in Science technology or laboratory science from a recognized institution of learning.
2. Prior experience working in a science laboratory.
3. Ability to manage a science laboratory and relevant chemicals & equipment.
4. Knowledge of current laboratory safety regulations.
5. Minimum Score grade of “C” in any science subject taken at “Advanced” Level.
6. Willingness to learn and grow under the instruction of a teaching faculty and in a professional environment.
7. Ability to work individually and also as a part of a team.
8. Experience working with children, preferably in a school environment.
9. Computer competency.
10. Good interpersonal and communication skills (especially in English).
11. Organized, reliable, dependable, and works well independently.
