Job Description/Requirements
The role is responsible for the prompt and secure transportation of goods, including the exportation of human remains, in compliance with all safety standards and organizational protocols, which entails registration and record maintenance.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Job – Specific Qualification: A valid driver’s license in types B, C, D, and E is required. (Please attach a copy of the driver’s license to the attachments area).
- Work Experience: A minimum of two (2) years as a Heavy Vehicle operator and Material Handling Equipment operator is required. Progressively responsible experience in movement operations acquired through commercial air/sea/road/rail operations, commercial freight forwarding, or military logistics is required.
- Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable.
Operates heavy and light vehicles.
- Operates Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
- Conduct pre-operational checks to ensure equipment functionality and safety
- Load, unload, and transport cargo within the warehouse, maintaining stability and preventing damage
- Establishes service or repair status, following applicable regulations.
- Maintains logs of working hours / vehicle services, secures cargo for transport, using ropes, blocks, chain, binders, or covers.
- Secure cargo for transport using appropriate methods (straps, netting, etc.).
- Prepare and verify shipping documentation for airport cargo deliveries.
- Focal point for offloading all types of vehicles from contractor trucks and verify that equipment is not damaged, and all the necessary tools are available while adhering to all transport regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring the safe storage of equipment and materials.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks on assigned equipment as instructed.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or damaged cargo to the supervisor immediately.
- Participate in safety training programs and adhere to all UN safety policies and procedures.
- Follow instructions from supervisors and maintain clear communication during operations.
- Checks conditions of trailers after contents have been unloaded to ensure that there has been no damage.
- Takes care of the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles/ MHE, checks oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc. and performs minor repairs.
- Keeps the heavy vehicles, and associated equipment, clean and in good working order.
- Reports to the unit supervisor any incidents encountered on the road.
- Reports serious mechanical problems to the appropriate personnel.
- Keeps a log of his/her activities.
- Monitors road conditions and watches for traffic congestion.
- Follows all applicable traffic laws.
- Keeps logs of fuel consumption, maintenance etc.
- Ensures that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of accident.
- Applies good judgment in the context of assignments given.
- Follow instructions from supervisors and maintain clear communication during operations.
- Performs any other tasks as required.
Cargo Handling.
- Compliance with best practices in safely handling all cargo delivered, collected, or stored.
- Ensure all received cargo is appropriately placed in its designated area for future movement.
- Ensure that all cargo movement during loading and offloading of trucks has the correct documentation.
- Ensuring all consignments are labeled correctly, including consignor and consignee details.
- Receive incoming cargo from Self-accounting units and HTU and cross-check against the manifest.
- Ensure accuracy of cargo manifests, customs clearance, and related documentation when loading trucks for dispatch.
- Delivery human remains to the airport for export and ensure correctness of airway bill and accompanying documents including verification of cancelled passport, embalming and certificate of death.
- Possess a valid driver’s license with endorsements required for the vehicles used for airport deliveries.
- Be familiar with airport cargo handling procedures, including security protocols and documentation requirements.
- Understand and adhere to time-sensitive deadlines for airport cargo deliveries.
- Maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with airport personnel.
Data Entry and Verification
- Ensure Transit cargo information is presented for input in the backlog report database.
- Make sure all cargo of dangerous goods are separated and identified with the correct documentation.
- Make sure that Cold Chain Cargo is correctly stored and that the Cold Storage facility is Operational.
- Confirm that all data for consignments is accurately presented for shipment.
- Collect and collate freight agent documents upon presentation of inbound freight.
- Ensure that all documents related to the importation on the manifest (load lists) are accurate before receipt of all consignments.
- Arranges customs clearance and related documentation.
- Lift and carry cargo as required and ensure cargo (including dangerous cargo) is loaded according to International Regulations.
- Informs appropriate consignees on delivery of items.
- Transfer of baggage to the terminal area and follow up on misplaced or damaged baggage.
- Maintains unit files as required (both in hard and soft copies), as well as administrative instructions and other related documentation.
- Provides general office support services such as drafting routine correspondence and distribution to various officials.
- Verify all documents during delivery and dispatch of all commercial cargo for import and export purposes.
