Job Summary
Health and Safety officer will be responsible for ensuring the safety of workers on construction sites. S/he will monitor all activities to ensure that everyone is following proper procedures and using equipment correctly and will be tasked to always do investigations on accidents or other incidents to determine their cause and how they might be prevented in the future.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provides the necessary advice to the Site Supervisors on on-site health and safety issues. Monitors compliance with the Project and Company’s Occupational Health and safety policies by conducting regular inspections and internal auditing of site activities. Monitor compliance with established site safety rules and make sure these are conspicuously posted. Undertakes as a minimum a weekly safety inspection and prepares a report for submittal and review with the Site Manager. This report is also transmitted to the HSE Coordinator Conduct a daily tour of the working areas and log details of the observations on the Daily Observation Register. Unsafe conditions and unsafe acts are to be reported immediately. Report immediately to the Site Manager any serious safety breaches that place workers in life-threatening situations. Assist the Site Manager, Construction Manager, and Construction Supervisor in undertaking risk assessments and identifying safe systems of work to be recorded in safe work method statements. Develop and deliver internal training courses on health and safety topics to the site team. Undertake a daily Toolbox Talk with site-assigned personnel and ensure that records are maintained of the talks. Assist Construction Supervisors in delivering Pre-Task Briefings to the workforce on the control measures identified in risk assessments and the safe system of work to be adhered to Develop and deliver the Site Safety Orientation Training for all workers including Subcontractors and visitors prior to starting work or visiting the site. Complete the incident notification and investigations and issue the report to the Site Manager, HSE Coordinator, and HSE Manager Audit the registers and permit systems maintained for lifting equipment, lifting accessories, excavations, confined spaces, hot works, Lock-out/Tag-out, etc. Provide weekly input of H&S statistics and data to HSE CoordinatorQualifications and Skills Required.
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Environment management, or other equivalent and relevant qualifications from recognized institutions Occupational Health and Safety certifications is an added advantage Minimum professional experience of 5 years as HSSE Officer or Engineer Strong knowledge of environmental and health and safety basic regulatory and legal framework Good computer skills - MS Excel and MS Word Highly organized and detail-oriented Occupational Health and Safety or Risk Management Working knowledge of National Occupational Health and Safety Act legislation and regulations Passionate about health and safety High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability Strong work ethic and positive team attitude Sound knowledge of construction and building techniques and ability to read and interpret.
