Job Description/Requirements

Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is a not-for-profit charitable NGO that was established in 1993 with the vision of “Palliative Care for all in need in Africa”. HAU is registered by the NGO Bureau as a local NGO and is a licensed PNFP health facility registered by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council (UMDPC). HAU owns the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA) which is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). 


HAU has 3 objectives:

To provide an affordable and culturally appropriate clinical service to patients suffering from 


Cancer and/ or AIDS

2. To offer education in Palliative Care to health and non-health professionals 

3. To support the spread of Palliative Care to other African Countries.


HAU has three hospice sites; Hospice Kampala, Mobile Hospice Mbarara in Mbarara district, and Little Hospice Hoima in Hoima district. HAU promotes modern methods of pain and symptom control as well as “whole-person” (holistic) care for patients living with cancer and HIV/AIDS. HAU wishes to recruit dynamic, skilled, and caring Ugandans committed to palliative care to fill the following position: 


Title:  Francophone Nurse trainer

Location: Makindye – Kampala 


Job Purpose:

To facilitate the initiation and expansion of palliative care in Francophone and other African countries through an appropriate and affordable model for Africa. 


Specific Duties: 

  • Conduct situation analyses and assess the service already in place in the country and the service is supported
  • Sensitize and advocate health care professionals, ministry officials and policymakers about the need for palliative care provision in countries visited
  • Advocate for and support the provision, availability, and accessibility of affordable oral morphine solutions in different countries
  • Provide hands-on training for palliative care teams on care and support given to patients and their families
  • Coach and mentor palliative care teams on a holistic approach in palliative care so that patients have comprehensive care including physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs
  • Support Palliative care teams to develop or improve their procedures, systems, and processes for quality Palliative Care
  • Conduct home visits with palliative care teams in respective countries
  • Organize initiators course in Uganda for Francophone African countries
  • Support the establishment and use of affordable clinical tools and standards that are culturally appropriate in different countries
  • Dissemination of research findings and sharing lessons learned with the Francophone African countries


Minimum Requirements:

  • A Nurse or Clinical Officer holding a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in Palliative Care. At least 2 years of cumulative working experience in a health facility. Knowledge of the spoken and written French language is required.
