What We Do

EnerGrow is an appliance financing start-up based in Uganda. We partner with energy companies to help people purchase appliances to increase their incomes which they could not normally afford.

EnerGrow partners with energy companies to do this in the communities they are expanding into. Why? Hundreds of millions of people across Africa have expensive on- and off-grid electricity connections that are barely used. Customers can afford power, but they cannot afford appliances that could help earn an income.

This situation both leaves energy companies across Africa economically challenged while their customers remain stuck in an unnecessary poverty trap. Energy companies are slow to expand into rural areas and cannot provide good services even in urban areas because so many customers consume so little that the energy companies often struggle to afford to maintain their infrastructure.

EnerGrow’s data-driven asset finance helps accelerate rural electrification and improve rural energy services while at the same time increasing rural peoples’ incomes.

About the Role

EnerGrow is an asset finance start up that is developing a large portfolio of work on electric cooking. This includes partnering with minigrid energy companies and On Grid utility partners such as UMEME to bring e-cooking to communities in both rural and urban areas around the country, and also working on consultancy type projects regarding development of national sales and distribution plans for bringing e-cooking to all corners of the country.


This role will be responsible for coordinating and carrying out work on e-cooking sales and market research at EnerGrow, including for building and implementing delivery and sales channels for microfinance sales of electric pressure cookers and other e-cooking technologies.



The specific tasks of this role include

Clean Cooking

  • Oversee the research and data collection process for Electric Pressure Cookers (EPCs), including in semi-rural areas where EnerGrow will be supporting market development.


Product Management/Partner Engagement:

  • Pilot initiatives and adaptations to EPC Sales and to improve product reach, repayment rates, affordability and product profitability
  • With collaboration of Project Manager be accountable for a successful collaboration between minigrid partners and EnerGrow
  • Modelling and monitoring company risk and exposure
  • Work closely with local and foreign EPC Manufacturers to ensure that EPCs procured by EnerGrow suite the needs of the Ugandan market
  • Identifying new data sources and/or collaborations to gain deeper insights on how to scale up EPC’s in Urban, Peri-Urban and Semi-rural settings


Sales and Marketing

  • Work closely with the National Sales Manager to ensure that EPCs are sold and distributed to customers across the country
  • Drive electric pressure cooking supply chain and sales decisions
  • Training design/sensitisation


Commercial Product Building


  • Work collaboratively with Sales, Distribution and Credit team to integrate EnerGrow best practice into product lifecycle process.

Requirements

  • 2+ years experience working in clean cooking
  • 5+ years specifically in Product Management or Project Management would be preferred.
  • A self-starter, collaborative, entrepreneurial attitude and team spirit. You model accountability and roll-up your sleeves to deliver when needed and create opportunities for participation and increased responsibility.
  • Process oriented and curious to understand how to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of business through ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and action research.
  • Motivated to transform small-scale data, evidence, and learning into improved program and sales methods that reach millions of customers based on their unit economics, repeatability, customer demand, and market opportunity.
  • Proven track record of driving growth through product management
  • Experience in collaborating with multiple team members and taking the lead on projects
  • Understanding of development contexts and the systemic financial challenges facing small businesses and households. Experience in the Asset finance industry is an added advantage.
  • Specific experience in the clean cooking industry.
  • Experience creating and managing budgets - You build compelling business cases rooted in rigorous product design, evidence of impact, a track record of delivery, and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including in building cross functional teams and managing efficiently in a changing environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A team player who can manage efficiently in a changing environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • High level of integrity
  • Fluency in English and Luganda
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel. This role will require a significant level of accurately capturing and entering data.

  • Commitment to excellence, outstanding work ethic, and attention to detail
  • Resourcefulness and creative problem solving
