Job Title: Community Development Specialist

Reports to: Director of Programs


Job Description:

PHP will be hiring a Community Development Specialist (CDS) who will help to carry out the organization’s activities related to community development and community health. The CDS will be responsible for implementation of programs in areas ranging from maternal and neonatal health to health sector governance.  Specifically, the CDS will have the following duties:

• Serve as an ambassador of PHP in its partner communities and help manage PHP’s community-based service delivery.

• Carry out program activities in a fashion that adheres to all of the organization’s implementation standards and protocols.

• Introduce innovations to the PHP’s work, and help to develop high-quality program materials.

• Develop and oversee program implementation schedules and work plans.

• Assist with monitoring and evaluation activities and the collection of program-related data.

• Spearhead surveys and other research-related activities.

• Write regular reports on program implementation progress and challenges.

• Any other duties that may be assigned.


Time Period:

The Community Development Specialist will first be given a contract of 6 months, with hopes of long-term contract renewal based on performance.


Minimum Education Requirements: A bachelor’s degree with relevant experience and/or training related to community development and health. Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years experience. Candidates with postgraduate training will be more competitive.


Skills and Qualifications:

• Fluency in Runyankore.

• Knowledge or training related to community health and community development.

• Strong computer skills, translation skills, teamwork capabilities, and writing skills.

• Effective communication skills, logistical management capabilities, and strong work ethic.

• A start-up mentality and an ability to handle a wide range of tasks, often under pressure.

• Applicants must either have a driving permit or commit to obtaining a driving permit within three months of the commencement of the position.


Living Requirements:

The Community Development Specialist will be based in Mbarara City but will spend most of the time in rural communities, with limited or no electricity and running water.
