This role requires a strong commitment to addressing GBV issues and providing essential services to PWS. An Assistant GBV Officer plays a critical role in addressing and preventing Gender-Based violence within refugee communities. The candidate profile should reflect a strong commitment to GBV prevention and response, a comprehensive understanding of the issues, and the ability to provide support and services with sensitivity and empathy. The Assistant Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Officer reports to the Senior Protection Officer and works directly with communities and persons of concern to identify the risks and ensure the implementation of a community and rights-based approach. Specifically, the incumbent will support the office on GBV prevention, risk mitigation and response based on policy and guidance as well as plan and undertakes quality, timely and effective GBV prevention and response in line with UNHCRs policy and guidance on GBV, in an age, gender and diversity inclusive manner as well as in line with survivor-centered approach.
S/he will provide technical guidance and support GBV mainstreaming in AoR and lead the GBV coordination with inter-agency partners, government authorities and people we serve ensuring quality multisectoral responses and activities are in line with the existing SOPs.
The incumbent will liaise with other actors and lead technical meetings as well as work closely with other sections response programs as well as coordinate and monitor GBV programmes in AoR, provide technical support and guidance to partners ensuring good quality implementation of projects in line with National GBV Strategy and global GBV minimum standards.

Nature of Position:
UNHCR SO Arua covers four refugee settlements namely: Rhino Camp, Imvepi, Lobule and Bidibidi Refugee Settlements. Bidibidi settlement host the largest refugee in Uganda and as of 31st October 2023, the active population of concern registered is 197,296 individuals (93,778M, 103,518F). Out of the total population, 84% are women, and children while 25% of the population are youth aged between 15 and 24 years.
The settlement is 240 sqkm and population is scattered in five zones that geographically are separated with the farthest being 45 kilometers out of Yumbe. Refugees have settled within the Ugandan communities and sharing scarce resources, make peaceful coexistence as an important element of coordination. With the lack of resources within UNHCR and in general within humanitarian organizations, there should be a great emphasis on the refugee resilience as well as the need for innovative and creative ideas to manage the great need vis-Ã -vis the limited resources.
