Job Description


The Grant Writing Officer will be based in Kalisizo, Kyotera District and will work closely with the Executive Director and the Program Coordinators for the different programs. The Grant Writer will be primarily responsible for developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations, and will persuasively communicate BBBU’s mission and programs to potential funders. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Grant Writer will assemble and submit grant requests, establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts, conduct prospect research, and maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines. The Grant Writer will be responsible researching, writing and coordinating the grant application process; management of proposals and maintaining a donor database.

Background Information

Brick by Brick Uganda’s mission is to create partnerships that improve education, health, and economic opportunity in the Rakai and Kyotera Districts of Uganda. Since 2003, Brick by Brick has been working directly with rural communities and local government to rebuild schools and identify critical needs in health, water, and sanitation. It operates under a five-step partnership model of identification of needs, generation of ideas with Ugandan partners and the community, direct partnership to pilot innovation, measurement of results, and expansion.

Brick by Brick currently implements three major programs: Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA) Program, My Pads Program, and Schools Program. The BAMA Program seeks to increase demand, access to, and utilization of quality obstetric and newborn care services in Rakai and Kyotera by improving quality of health service delivery and mobilizing communities for obstetric health. The My Pads Program seeks to improve sexual and reproductive health among adolescent girls and young women through a 9-session after-school health education program. The Schools Program partners with Universal Primary and Secondary Education schools to improve infrastructure and establish libraries to promote effective learning environments.


  • Developing and writing grant proposals to foundations and other grant-making organizations,

  • Persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and programs to potential funders;

  • Write high-quality grant proposal narratives, applications, and supporting documents

  • Responsible for researching, collecting data, and writing of each grant

  • Assembling and submitting grant requests, including letters, proposals, budgets, and presentations;

  • Work with department managers to compile financials and data for grant application purposes

  • Manage the proposal submission process to ensure timely submission of all required materials.

  • Develops and maintains a proposal calendar,

  • Coordinate and follow-ups on the progress of submitted proposals

  • Establishing and maintaining personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts and program officers;'

  • Develops an annual grants strategy

  • Conduct prospect research to identify, cultivate and solicit new grants

  • Ensuring prompt acknowledgement of foundation gifts;

  • Maintaining calendar to ensure timely submission of letters of inquiry, proposal deadlines, and


  • Prioritizing projects to keep multiple projects moving in a timely manner, meet deadlines and manage supplemental material required for proposals

  • Providing writing support for major donor and individual contribution letters and acknowledgements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Skills and Experience

Skills and experiences can include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree very desirable

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in research and grant writing; nonprofit experience a plus

  • Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills are essential with compelling writing skill

  • A high level of computer literacy required

  • High proficiency in all areas of Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as endnote and other software relevant for literature review and online data searches

  • Demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals, Detail-oriented, organized, deadline-driven

  • Have experience using online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information.

  • Candidates must possess an ability to work well under pressure and the ability to seek and synthesize information and communicate in a compelling and succinct form.

  • A solid understanding of budgets as they relate to proposals and grants,

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently with purpose and accuracy in a fast-paced environment able to craft funding proposals in a clear and compelling manner.
